A battle-scarred veteran of Korea, Hackworth served successive tours in Vietnam, becoming increasingly alarmed by declining standards in the Army and the dead-end policy in Southeast Asia. Matters came to a head during a 1971 television interview in which he criticized Army leadership, training and tactics in the field. For this the colonel was shamefully hounded into premature retirement, a potential Army superstar who was suddenly perceived as a dangerous renegade, according to this memoir written with freelancer Sherman. The engrossing autobiography of a fierce and fiercely outspoken warrior, it is also an inside account of the demoralization of a once-proud army during a period when "no one could afford to tell the truth, make an error, or admit to ignorance." The colonel makes sweeping condemnations in this passionate, profane, sometimes intemperate book (admirers of military historian S.L.A. Marshall will cringe at Hackworth's savage attack). In this book America's most decorated living soldier tells his life story in formidable detail with outstanding battlefield realism. Colonel Hackworth left the Army and went into exile over the conduct of the Vietnam War. Like all good autobiographies, his often tells more than he intended. This is as earnest and self-revealing as Anthony B. Herbert's Herbert: The Making of a Soldier (LJ 9/1/82), but less laconic. A rousing good book which will be useful to military professionals as well. Military Book Club main selection.

Excellent book. Well written, easily read, thought provoking. Is long, but not cumbersome.
I first read 'About Face' written by Col. David Hackworth during the late 1980s. I found it extremely valuable in helping me...a woman with little knowledge of anything military, understand better my children's dad, a land based Viet Nam combat vet and the problems he had to deal with before his death.
As the wife of yet a second Viet Nam combat vet, special forces, I suggest this book for anyone who wants a better understanding of the debt of gratitude and respect we citizens owe those willing to serve in The United States Military.

should be required reading for all seving military leaders

I first came to hear of ABOUT FACE from a friend and fellow NCO in Korea. He said I might think it was good, Was that an understatement. I read About Face in one fourteen hour plane ride back to Korea. I've read it three more times so far and recommend it to all my friends deserving the title Non-Commisioned Officer. I truly believe that all military leaders should read this and take from it; Hack's wisdom and experiance dealing with the military, Integrity and soldiering.

A Great Man, A Great Book, A Great Read

I bought this book when I was about 11 years old and a big fan of "war stories". I am now approaching twenty and have read this book at least once a year since first purchasing it, to the extent that it is now in three parts and the photographs have fallen out. This book is an intense, gripping, readable but most of all honest and believable account of one of America's greatest warriors and his experiences...from the forested slopes of Trieste in 1946 to being chased around Washington DC by Army Intell goons in 1971, this book, while entertaining, will also teach you everything you need to know about duty, honour,bravery and honest patriotism, qualities that come hard to find in the era of Iran-Contra, Tailhook, Whitewater and the like...
This book will make you laugh, cry and think.
Please, read it.

Super Histo Text for Medical Students

This book doesn't assume that you have an extensive background. The first year medical student who was a liberal arts major can read through this book once and know histology as good (or better) than a student with a master's degree in anatomy! The chapters flow very logically, allowing the reader to make the all-important integration of various regions of the body and the processes/histology associated with them. Furthermore, every page has photomicrographs and/or drawings which allow the reader to have not only a more complete understanding of the material, but a clinically useful knowledge of the proper appearance of tissues. This book leaves nothing out and is, at least at the medical school I attend, unanimously agreed to be the best histo book available.

The best Histology book that I've found.

This Histology book is the most thorough and well-written text out there. If you have no background in Histology, this book can be quite intimidating because it is content-rich. I was very overwhelmed when I first started with this book for undergrad, but now that I have gotten through it and read other titles for med school, I believe that this book is the best. It teaches Histology in a way that prepares you to be a real pathologist, using mostly light micrographs and tons of clinical correlations. Other Histology texts (e.g. Color Textbook of Histology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access) treat the subject as a general learning tool rather than as a core component of your potential specialty. They use more (and less-detailed) illustrations and electron micrographs with fewer clinical correlations and light micrographs.

Still, I would be hard-pressed to recommend this book to medical students if the book was not already required. It is probably more detailed than any medical school Histology course will be, and as a med student, your time is everything! Your time will probably be better spent in gross. Still, if you know that pathology is something you are interested in, this book is a great introduction to Histology and will better prepare you for your career than any other text.

Good Text, Needs more diagrams

This is a good histology text to read and understand. It has not only structural descriptions, but has related physiology and this makes the book interesting to read. With mastering histology in the first year of the medical school, pathology would be easy to learn in the future. This book makes histology a more interesting subject.
Advantages:
1.Lucid style in writing
2.Sentence type headings makes the essence of the following text very clear.
3.Most of the details that you need in the histology course could be found in this single volume.
4.Atlas is separately included in the end of every chapter other than the regular diagrams between the texts.
Disadvantages:
1.Lack of line diagrams- without a good number of line diagrams it would be difficult to grasp the material for a normal student like me.
2.No clear chapter outline in the beginning of each chapter. The Wheater's histology has an edge over this in this aspect.

Be a more perceptive leader amid complexity

+Dibyendu De guides us to see more clearly, via awareness of our selves, our intentions, and the exchanges we make within the complex adaptive systems of life. We are all learning through interactions and relationships that 'string' together in ways that alter the 'tube-like' paths we ordinarily traverse.

This book challenges us as readers to connect the dots via serendipity, filling in the gaps with our own wonderment. It contains essential pieces of discussion for those exploring the NEME (notice, engage, mull, exchange). The insights of Dibyendu are masterfully interwoven with his curation of Tagore, Gandhi, Einstein, Guru Nanak and others.

I found that to 'see' in the nemetics way is a form of yoga that can break us free of limiting stories. Personally, having participated in dialogues that helped fuel the production of this book, I found it a refreshing reflection on my own personal development.

I thank you Dibyendu for your unique contribution to nemetics and honoring the diversity of human perspectives/intentions that emerge from the wholeness/complexity of life. May many more of us become Maharaja— to win over our selves.

Seeing is Winning

I was most fortunate to spend a delightful, and insightful, week end with Dibyendu De. Yet, turning the last page of his latest publication “Winning Anywhere, the Power of See the NEME way” was rather bittersweet. Happy as a school girl to have spent my week end in such great didactic company and saddened to have my studies end (at least for now).
In this first instalment Dibyendu De opens the door to the International Nemetic Institute by bringing us to the understanding of N-E-M-E, an anagram for Notice, Engage, Mull, and Exchange. This new paradigm on emergent change teaches a broader way to approach wicked problems and apply that knowledge in a most practical way. Don’t be fooled by the apparent small size of this 184 page paperback and don’t be tempted to skim over a single word. These covers are packed full of comprehensive information presented layer upon layer to insure that not the smallest drop of knowledge will be lost.
“Winning Anywhere the Power of See the N-E-M-E Way” is a power tool and Dibyendu De delivers it to us with grace, care and attentive mindfulness.
The N-E-M-E paradigm is a practical and in depth assessment of how we interact emotionally, cognitively and physically with complex adaptive systems with the intent to solve inherent issues without impeding the adaptive flow of those systems.
In an effort to pique the curiosity of those whom may feel that this is a conversation left only to the engineers in the room, I will quote directly from this edition – “. . . the very act of paying attention is something like flow. It is not fixed or static . . . but like all flows, the flow can be impeded or stopped by artificial constraints we set up through our mental filters of likes, dislikes. . . when this happens we lose our agility”
As we all know, agility is our new socio-epistemological buzz word, regardless of the industry or discipline you may find yourself working in. If one hasn’t got ‘cognitive agility’ one might as well stay home.
So, to my artist friends, I ask that you put down any preconceived notions of being undone by anything an engineer has to say. To my engineer friends I say the same, put down any preconceived notions you may hold about new ideas and concepts. Read with abandon, read with curiosity, read with a spirit of adventure. You’ll be happy for it at the end. Which will become the beginning.

You have to watch Dibyendu in action on the floor of a client's plant to see the brilliance that is uniquely his. Having introduced him to a complexity language, known as NEMEetics (developed by other friends/colleagues including Michael Josefowicz, Ed Granger and Daniel Durant)), he could 'see' how his way of thinking 'fit' this pattern language. He ran with it and in the process ended up with this book.

If you accept the raves from his clients, he has a unique way of allowing them to 'see' things the way he does and he shares many of those experiences through this book.

The problem of "the color line", W. E. B. Du Bois's ever-present polemical theme, is at the core of this novel of sensual love, radical politics, and the quest for racial justice. Originally published in 1928, Dark Princess has a fantastical storyline, heavy with propagandist overtones. Du Bois depicts 1920s America as a racist nation primed for radical protest and terrorism. Matthew Townes, the protagonist, is a medical student expelled because his race bars him from the required course in obstetrics in a white hospital. Self-exiled in Berlin after his political idealism is corrupted, Townes falls in love with Princess Kautilya, daughter of a maharajah, and joins her international team in which people of color unite against white imperialism.

Dubois: Dark Princess

With the emergence of what has come to be known as modernity, no one writing of Du Bois, especially his earlier writings, can claim his mastery of economic, religious and political disciplines, making him incomparable to any scholar as it relates to understanding black religion and its messianic calling. His approach to Dark Princess is an extreme example: it interweaves social thought, black and Indian political theory, capitalist hybridization, biblical theology, post slavery studies and a pastiche of Eastern religion. Arnold Rampersand provides a similar acknowledgement of the interdisciplinary work of Dark Princess citing it as a "queer combination of outright propaganda and Arabian tale, of social realism, and quaint romance." Published in 1928, Du Bois, in his self proclaimed most favorite literary work, Dark Princess, unfolds the impact of the protracted violence of Euro-American modernity upon Pan Asian and Pan African people.

According to Bill Mullen, throughout his extensive career, W.E.B. Du Bois' stance for Asian nationalism is often overlooked and undervalued, even though it is essential to understanding his philosophy of politics, economy and religion. In 1904, Du Bois advocated Asia's war with Russia and completed a second trip to China in 1959. Mullen states, in his article entitled Afro-Asia Internationalism, Asia was for Du Bois, "a literal and figurative site of his intellectual evolution from "Fabian socialist" to "revolutionary Marxist." Because of his affiliations with Japan, India and China, Pan-Asian affairs merged into his work as a black intellectual and his vision of unification between dark bodies affected by the U.S. "color line" and dark bodies internationally affected by the international "color line. " For Du Bois, Asian and African peoples both were fighting to get out of the international strongholds of European colonialism.

Du Bois use of Kautilya's name has historical and political implications that are severe. In Roger Boesche's article, "Kautilya's Arthasastra on War and Diplomacy in Ancient India," he notes that, Kautilya was the key adviser to the Indian king Chandragupta Maurya (c. 317-293 B.C.E.), which strikingly is one of the names given to Matthew's and Kautilya's son in the conclusion of Dark Princess. Chandragupta was the first king to unite the Indian subcontinent in empire. Around 300 BCE, Kautilya wrote the Arthasastra which was a "science of politics intended to teach a wise king how to govern ." Boesche notes, "Kautilya offers wide-ranging and truly fascinating discussions on war and diplomacy, including his wish to have his king become a world conqueror." Moreover, Kautilya's Artharshatra gives an "analysis of which kingdoms are natural allies and which are inevitable enemies, his willingness to make treaties he knew he would break, his doctrine of silent war or a war of assassination against an unsuspecting king, his approval of secret agents who killed enemy leaders and sowed discord among them."
Throughout Dark Princess, we see Du Bois employ several of these political moves through Princess Kautilya, her entourage and allies, and especially in the character of Perigua. However, interestingly enough there is something that Princess Kautilya, an eastern representative of political and religious ideals, needs in order to fulfill her destiny against European colonialism. For Du Bois, it is imperative that Princess Kautilya understands the black American experience and most importantly the messianic calling of blacks and black Christianity. Du Bois, through Princess Kautilya, an Eastern figure, captures perhaps the inadequacy of her Eastern political power as it relates to overcoming oppression, in comparison to a group of Western dark people, blacks in America, who follow Christ. Again, for Du Bois, Asian and African peoples both were fighting to get out of the international strongholds of European colonialism. And we know Christianity's ties to colonialism, and moreover, the connection between colonialism and racism. Thus, Du Bois' debates are also undergirded and shaped against the religious thought of European Christianity, and its theological error upon Africa, Asia and America. It almost poses the question, what powerful influence, for Du Bois, does black Christianity have on political systems of the world?

About the Author

Albert M. Craig is the Harvard-Yenching Research Professor of History Emeritus at Harvard University, where he has taught since 1959. A graduate of Northwestern University, he received his Ph.D. at Harvard University. He has studied at Strasbourg University and at Kyoto, Keio, and Tokyo universities in Japan. He is the author of Choshu in the Meiji Restoration  (1961), The Heritage of Japanese Civilization (2011), and, with others, of East Asia , Tradition and Transformation (1989). He is the editor of Japan , A Comparative View (1973) and co-editor of Personality in Japanese History (1970), Civilization and

Enlightnment: the Early Thought of Fukuzawa Yukichi  (2009). He was the director of the Harvard-Yenching Institute. He has also been a visiting professor at Kyoto and Tokyo universities. He has received Guggenheim, Fulbright, and Japan Foundation Fellowships. In 1988 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government.

 

William A. Graham is Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean in the Faculty of Divinity at Harvard University, where he has taught for thirty-four years. He has directed the Center for Middle Eastern Studies and chaired the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on the Study of Religion, and the Core Curriculum Committee on Foreign Cultures. He received his BA in Comparative Literature from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, an A.M. and Ph.D. in History of Religion from Harvard, and studied also in Göttingen, Tübingen, Lebanon, and London. He is former chair of the Council on Graduate Studies in Religion (U.S. and Canada). In 2000 he received the quinquennial Award for Excellence in Research in Islamic History and Culture from the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. He has held John Simon Guggenheim and Alexander von Humboldt research fellowships and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his publications are Beyond the Written Word: Oral Aspects of Scripture in the History of Religion (1987); Divine Word and Prophetic Word in Early Islam (1977—ACLS History of Religions Prize, 1978); and Three Faiths, One God (co-authored, 2003).

 

Donald Kagan is Sterling Professor of History and Classics at Yale University, where he has taught since 1969. He received the A.B. degree in history from Brooklyn College, the M.A. in classics from Brown University, and the Ph.D. in history from Ohio State University. During 1958—1959 he studied at the American School of Classical Studies as a Fulbright Scholar. He has received three awards for undergraduate teaching at Cornell and Yale. He is the author of a history of Greek political thought, The Great Dialogue (1965); a four-volume history of the Peloponnesian war, The Origins of the Peloponnesian War (1969); The Archidamian War (1974); The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition (1981); The Fall of the Athenian Empire (1987); a biography of Pericles, Pericles of Athens and the Birth of Democracy (1991); On the Origins of War (1995); and The Peloponnesian War (2003). He is coauthor, with Frederick W. Kagan, of While America Sleeps (2000). With Brian Tierney and L. Pearce Williams, he is the editor of Great Issues in Western Civilization, a collection of readings. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal for 2002 and was chosen by the National Endowment for the Humanities to deliver the Jefferson Lecture in 2004.

 

Steven Ozment is McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard University. He has taught Western Civilization at Yale, Stanford, and Harvard. He is the author of eleven books. The Age of Reform, 1250–1550 (1980) won the Schaff Prize and was nominated for the 1981 National Book Award. Five of his books have been selections of the History Book Club: Magdalena and Balthasar: An Intimate Portrait of Life in Sixteenth Century Europe (1986), Three Behaim Boys: Growing Up in Early Modern Germany (1990), Protestants: The Birth of A Revolution (1992), The Burgermeister’s Daughter: Scandal in a Sixteenth Century German Town (1996), and Flesh and Spirit: Private Life in Early Modern Germany (1999). His most recent publications are Ancestors: The Loving Family of Old Europe (2001), A Mighty Fortress: A New History of the German People (2004), and “Why We Study Western Civ,” The Public Interest 158 (2005).

 

Frank M. Turner is John Hay Whitney Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University, where he served as University Provost from 1988 to 1992. He received his B.A. degree at the College of William and Mary and his Ph.D. from Yale. He has received the Yale College Award for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He has directed a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute. His scholarly research has received the support of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson Center. He is the author of Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England (1974), The Greek Heritage in Victorian Britain  (1981), which received the British Council Prize of the Conference on British Studies and the Yale Press Governors Award,  Contesting Cultural Authority: Essays in Victorian Intellectual Life  (1993), and  John Henry Newman: The Challenge to Evangelical Religion  (2002). He has also contributed numerous articles to journals and has served on the editorial advisory boards of The Journal of Modern History, Isis, and Victorian Studies. He edited The Idea of a University by John Henry Newman (1996), Reflections on the Revolution in France by Edmund Burke (2003), and Apologia Pro Vita Sua and Six Sermons by John Henry Newman (2008). Between l996 and 2006 he served as a Trustee of Connecticut College and between 2004 and 2008 as a member of the Connecticut Humanities Council. In 2003, Professor Turner was appointed Director of the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University.

I liked it well enough

I enjoyed this book through the course I took. It's structured well, but is sometimes vague. It just covers so much content and often things aren't explained fully so you have to read between the lines. It's best if you already have a pretty good grasp of the topic being discussed but if you use it along with the other material (power points and chapter reviews) that your professor should have, you'll be fine. You probably don't have much of a choice anyway though if your professor uses the book. Good luck.

WARNING!! Stay away from ANY class that uses this book! It is the most disorganized mess that will leave you frustrated

This is one of the worst books ever written! I find it hard to believe they keep asking the same people to author World history! It is clearly not written with the student in mind! If you are taking a class with this book- DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS! If your professor/teacher participates in My History Lab, it might be helpful.

Great Condition/ Low price

So I purchased this book for under seven dollars (including the shipping)and I was expecting a torn and freyed book seeing that it was being sold for such a low price. Though to my surprise the book had little tearing (as far as the cover goes) and the pages where in great condition! If this company had sold the other books I needed, I would've gladly purchased them. For instance, I ended up paying seventy-nine dollars for a book that barely had a cover and that I didn't need for as long as I do the history book I purchased. For future books I'll need, I'll be sure to check these guys out first before going to the book store.
