About the Author
Dr.Lake is a Board certified psychiatrist in the San Francisco Bay area. He has chairedsymposia and workshops on integrative mental healthcare at national andinternational conferences on non-conventional and integrative mental healthcare. Dr. Lake was previously a clinical assistant professor in the departmentof psychiatry and behavioral medicine at Stanford. He founded and chaired theAmerican Psychiatric Association's Caucus on Integrative Medicine from 2004through 2010. He is a founding member and former chair of the InternationalNetwork of Integrative Mental Health.
Dr.Lake is the author of a 10-volumeseries on integrative mental healthcare, self-published in 2015, and theauthor, co-author or editor of four textbooks on non-conventional mental healthcare: ChineseMedical Psychiatry: A Clinical Manual, (with Bob Flaws), Blue PoppyPress, 2000; Textbookof Integrative Mental Health Care, Thieme, 2006; and Complementaryand Alternative Treatments in Mental Health Care (co-edited withDavid Spiegel), American Psychiatric Press, 2007, and IntegrativeMental Health Care: A Therapist's Handbook, Norton, 2009. I bought this to better understand anxiety I see in the public school I teach at. I like the way the book was set up in easy to read and understand sections. I plan on recommending this to my colleagues both other teachers and the counselors, social workers, and school psychologists.

VERY GOOD BEGINNERS GUIDE

As a matter of background, I chair the American Psychiatric Association Caucus on Complementary, Alternative, & Integrative Medicine. The group I chair—its very existence—is credited to its founder, James Lake, MD.
Dr. James Lake and others in the Integrative Psychiatry (or Integrative Medicine in Psychiatry) movement are concerned about the way modern day Psychiatry is practiced. Specifically, the average psychiatrist has been educated extensively on psychiatric medications (which themselves can be quite helpful and life-saving), but received little to no education on non-medication treatment options, other than an Intro to Counseling. Until Integrative Psychiatry groups like mine are successful at improving how Psychiatry is practiced, it is incumbent upon a person suffering from a psychiatric disorder to become self-educated on what the non-medication treatment options are. Your typical psychiatrist is unlikely to know about these treatments and so will be unable to recommend them to you. However, if you implement them on your own, you might ultimately end up needing psychiatric medication less.
Any book within this e-book series is a very good place for a beginner to start their self-education. Each of the books is well-organized and structured similarly. This makes it easy to skip to the section that you are interested in and/or to browse the text rapidly. It is also a quick read, and can be completed in less than two hours.
You can tell that this “publication” has been self-published, as there are areas where e.g. the grammar could have been improved upon. However, it does not interfere with understanding the content in any way. If you can forgive that the book did not pass through the hands of a formal copy-editor, you will find that the content of this book teaches you all of the basic Integrative Psychiatry treatment options that you would want to know.
If after reading this beginners guide you decide you want to become more of an expert, the e-book conveniently offers resources for deeper reading.
There are very few Integrative Psychiatry books written by actual psychiatrists. This e-book series has been written by an experienced psychiatrist, and is the only Integrative Psychiatry publication that packs a lot of good information into a brief and easy-to-read guide.

Lake is the author of four of the major textbooks in this area as well as many groundbreaking articles in scholarly journals. Now he has provided a series of brief guides to non-medication oriented safe and effective integrative care for specific mental health disorders. Each volume is less than 100 pages, well organized and readable. Each volume describes the integrative approach, overviews a disorder, and introduces integrative evidence-based interventions. I recommend this practical series to patients and their families seeking integrative treatments. Practitioners in integrative mental health will also find this a useful resource to share with patients.
