He was allocated a thin, iron-framed bed under a window in a small, filthy room that he shared with three other English men - and colonies of ants and fast-running cockroaches. Jonathan's first impressions were not promising. The food was awful and he had absolutely nothing in common with anyone at the kibbutz. He was set to work on night shifts in a bleak factory, on some dangerous and arcane machinery. He'd never worked in a factory before. He'd never worked shifts before. He hated it. He struggled with the physically demanding and unpleasant work, and was hopeless at it. He realised he had set himself a target of staying there for six months, which seemed like an awful prospect. Unable to face the ignominy and embarrassment of running home in the first week, he decided he must do his best, and try to overcome adversity. Kibbutz Virgin is his story. Read on as Jonathan experiences danger when caught in cross-border conflict between Lebanon and Syria, romance as he shacks up with an American girl called Chrissie, and adventure as he tries some not-so-legal substances. Kibbutz Virgin will appeal to fans of travel writing and those interested in Middle Eastern history. Jonathan Nicholas, who published Hospital Beat in 2011 with Matador, has been inspired by Dirk Bogarde.

Loved it, can't wait for his next book!

I discovered "Kibbutz Virgin" while doing genealogy research about my distant cousins who were founders of Kibbutz Dafna in the 1940s, in pre-state Palestine. I first visited Dafna about a year before Jonathan's time there, and shared many of the same experiences.

However, I was a visitor, and mingled mainly with my family and other kibbutzniks, and not the volunteers, who were generally regarded as hash-smoking hippies. I often wondered why non-Jewish, non-ideological teenagers from around the world would volunteer to work in an Israeli socialist community, and what their experience was like.

"Kibbutz Virgin" answered my questions in an engaging and entertaining way, and evoked a lot of nostalgia for my time in Dafna and the surrounding area. I believe that anyone who spent time in a kibbutz in the late 1970s, as either a visitor or volunteer, would enjoy this book, as would anyone curious about what the experience was like.

I can't wait for the author to write a book about Lincolnshire, where my wife's family is from. Jonathan's blend of keen perception and quirky outlook make for very entertaining reading!

A great trip back to a wonderful time!

I loved this book, & recommend it to anyone who has ever worked as a volunteer on a kibbutz in Israel, or ever wanted to or want to understand what people were doing, going off to Israel in their youth to work on a Kibbutz?!

Reading this book took me back
not just to when Jonathan was 18, but it invoked my own memories of being 18 on a kibbutz (which just happened to be the same kibbutz actually, 20yrs later though). I'm sure that anyone who holds their kibbutz experience close to their heart can identify with Jonathan's experiences. This book made me laugh, reminisce & shed tears in memory of a wonderful experience, his & my own. I too have much gratitude to Kibbutz Dafna & it's Kibbutzniks for giving so many young people a life changing experience of living & working in Israel. Toda raba

Terrific Story

I spent time on a kibbutz in the late 70's and this book captures that experience brilliantly. Life on a kibbutz is so unique -- eating meals with often dozens of other people, working at sometimes menial jobs (like in the kitchen, peeling kilos of onions, loading the dishwasher) side by side with people from around the world. Buying up cheap grog and cigarettes in the Kibbutz shop, in preparation for partying (which was often). Learning about the Israeli outlook on life from the people themselves. Making life-long friendships. This book covers it all and the illustrations help bring the experience to life. I don't know if young people still undertake to travel in Israel and stay on a kibbutz, but I often cite it as one of the best journeys I've ever taken and Kibbutz Virgin would be my number one choice as a "travel guide" for anyone setting out to do just that.Kibbutz Virgin

Gorgeous book and delicious recipes!

I have not spent much time in British Columbia, but having lived in Alaska years ago, I definitely made multiple trips through it. I can clearly remember the breathtaking scenery, and now I get to enjoy their delicious food through this gorgeous book.

There is so much to love in this cookbook, from the delightful recipes to ingenious tips and tricks. I love to make my own bone broth to use, but I’d never though of using flexible muffin tins to freeze it into more manageable portions. Love this idea! Or how about Garlic Poached in Oil. You can use the garlic just as you would fresh garlic in recipes, and the now flavored oil is perfect for salad dressings, bruschetta, etc.

As for the recipes themselves, they’re divided by season and from there they are divided into savory and sweet. We’re heading into winter, so it’s a perfect time for a Rustic Beef Stew–soooo good! Or how about what is probably my favorite recipe in this book, Chocolate Hazelnut Tarts for dessert?

Baked Eggs are popular in my house, and these kick it up a notch with a multitude of seasoned fillings to choose from. Gougeres (Cheese Puffs) are amazing and well loved at my house as well. Of course, for comfort food, you can’t miss with classic Chicken Pot Pies.

Great overview of Combined Cycle for the layman

This was a great book for a layperson such as myself in understanding combined cycle powerplants. It explains the economic reasons why these power plants are more efficient, and goes into detail on each of the major engineered equipment pieces of this plant, and how they relate to one another. Explains things well in parts where the book is technical. Highly recommended for a layperson.

Good overview of the combined cycle process

This book is a good overview of the combined cycle process. It saves the equations for the end of the book and spends most of the text discussing concepts. The case studies at the end of the book are particularly interesting. The section on Integrated Gasification and Combined Cycle was useful because it discussed differences in design theory for each of the major manufacturers. Unfortunately the previous chapters did not spend as much time discussing differences in manufacturer designs.

Theoretical-biologist Josh Mitteldorf has a PhD from UPenn. He runs the website AgingAdvice.org, and writes a weekly column for ScienceBlog.com. Mitteldorf has had visiting research and teaching positions at various universities including MIT, Harvard, and Berkeley.

Dorion Sagan is a celebrated writer, ecological philosopher and theorist. His essays, articles, and book reviews have appeared in Natural History, Smithsonian, Wired, New Scientist, and The New York Times, among others.

A convincing case for aging as a genetic program

Mitteldorf's theory of aging can be summed up as follows. We are programmed to age because it is beneficial to the species as a whole. Aging helps prune the herd and keep the food supply abundant.

What does it mean to say that we are programmed to age? It means that the body "knows" how to be young, but chooses to be old.

This makes aging a formidable foe since we are deeply wired to age... if some individuals could, through luck, fail to age, they would quickly take over the rest... At the same time, this suggests that if we know enough about how the body keeps "its aging clock", we could possibly reset it.

A superb study on the aging process

An excellent book on a very challenging subject.
I enjoyed this book very much, having been a student of longevity for 40 years.
Josh's book, among its many other strengths, is a studied examination of evolutionary concepts of aging, and how populations protect themselves from extinction by taking protective measures against overpopulation.
I also got some good tips on how we might lengthen our own lives as well as improve the quality of life, so we don't fall prey to illnesses that accompanies aging.
I feel that, far from being a flaw, this is a definite asset, in a great book.
I was most impressed with the discussion of the Demographic Theory of Aging, Josh's original concept; which explains many questions raised by this most intriguing subject.

An interesting scientific hypothesis-- with some politics and a touch of woo.

The central hypothesis of this book is that aging is a group-selected adaptation that serves to “stabilize ecosystems, to level the death rate in good times and hard times.” This is a very interesting idea and I thought it was compellingly argued in this book. I wish Mitteldorf had gone into more technical detail on the scientific evidence--- maybe a chapter on the details of his research. There is something of an as-discussed-elsewhere flavor to the exposition. In fact, at the end he references his coming book Cracking the Aging Code “for academic biologists.”

There is a longstanding academic debate on the question of whether fitness selection pressure occurs in humans at a higher order of social organization than the individual, i.e. group selection. Because Mitteldorf’s hypothesis is a type of group selection, he takes it as necessary to defend the idea of group selection in general to support his specific hypothesis of aging. To be sure, the mainstream bias against group selection probably is a barrier to acceptance of this aging theory, “…the root of the scientific community’s failure to understand aging.” This is at least partly because the group selection controversy is often discussed in the context of the topic of human altruism. Mitteldorf wades into the controversy of whether strong altruism is a result of group level fitness selection pressure. This is a very interesting topic, but in my view distracts somewhat from his core thesis on aging.

In the first place, group selection in the broader sense has almost certainly occurred in evolution. Quoting Eugene Koonin from The Logic of Chance, “I posit that primordial evolution leading from small genetic elements to large genomes comparable to the genomes of modern cellular life forms appears to be all but impossible without some form of group selection.” On the face of it the evolution of multicellular organisms is a form of selection at successive hierarchical levels of complexity above individual selfish genetic elements. Plus, Mitteldorf convincingly argues that genetically programmed aging occurs in protists, nematodes, and fruitflies. None of this rides on the question of group selection for human altruism.

Mitteldorf then really goes on a tangent to indulge his personal views of the political implications of genetically programmed altruism; the fact that humans have selfish genes doesn’t imply genetically determined individual selfishness in the ordinary sense. So in a book on the science of aging we get some gratuitous political assertions. For just one example, “If they told the truth about their motives, the rapacious corporate giants could never sell deregulation to an enlightened democracy. So they promote the dogma of a ‘free market,’ not because they believe in this or any ideology but because it supports the freedom of the largest and the strongest to pillage everyone else. Historically, an important part of the argument for the benignity of free markets comes from the analogy with evolution.”

In my opinion, Mitteldorf is correct that the group selection explanation for altruism will eventually carry the day. (I particularly like Bowles and Gintis on this, A Cooperative Species: Human Reciprocity and its Evolution.) But strong altruism evolved to punish free riders as much as it did to help others in the ingroup. It is likely that in early humans intertribal conflict was a main pressure point for survival of the fittest group---kill the men of the neighboring tribe and steal their women and hunting grounds. Ingroup/outgroup psychology has been the basis for unspeakable acts of inhumanity. The study of human cooperation from the evolutionary perspective is the basis for a nascent evidence-based public policy, but it’s early in the process. For example, Elinor Ostrom’s Governing the Commons: The Evolution of Institutions for Collective Action is a primer on the topic of evidence-based public policy. It does not necessarily imply strong centralized regulation as the most efficient, fair or stable form of government. For the purposes of this book review I simply point out that altruism is a very complex topic far beyond the scope of this book. Mitteldorf’s interaction with the topic is necessarily perfunctory because it’s actually off topic. I think it somewhat distracts from the impact of his core arguments on aging.

Lastly is the topic of anti-aging remedies. It’s exciting stuff; I think I’m going to ask my doctor to put me on Metformin. But this topic is kind of a footnote to the rest of the book. Deservedly so since the science is so scanty. I think Mitteldorf could have been a little more explicit in delineating the degree of the evidence for any of the things he mentions. It starts to be a longish list of various things people are trying that may or may not pan out to prolong healthy lifespan.

About the Author
Sushil Bikhchandani is a Professor in the Anderson School of Management Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. His teaching and research interests include auctions, market institutions, herd behavior and information economics. Professor Bikhchandani has published in numerous academic journals, including Theoretical Economics, Operations Research, the Journal of Economic Theory, and Econometrica.

Jack Hirshleifer (1925-2005) was an American economist and long-time professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1955 to 1960, and thereafter at UCLA until 2001. Professor Hirshleifer was well known for his work on uncertainty and information in economics, the economic analysis of conflict, and bioeconomics. His undergraduate textbook, Price Theory and Applications, went into seven editions. A 1958 article by Hirshleifer began the triumphant comeback of Irving Fisher's theory of capital and interest, now deemed canonical.

John G. Riley is the Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of California, Los Angeles. A Fellow of the Econometric Society, his research has appeared in eminent journals such as the American Economic Review, Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Economic Theory, and the RAND Journal of Economics. Professor Riley is the author of Essential Microeconomics (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and co-author, with the late Jack Hirshleifer, of the first edition of The Analytics of Uncertainty and Information (Cambridge University Press, 1992).

Must-read for UK gamers

Worthwhile reading for any gamer interested in the history of the medium. As someone who's never played anything older than the AMIGA, I get the feeling that the author does get a bit starry-eyed at times, but his acerbic wit and encyclopedic knowledge more than make up for it. And really, where else will you read about a time where mainstream game studios released games where babies die by the hundreds in an ill-staffed Thatcher era NHS nursery, or you're an alcoholic cleaning lady sippin' on the cooking sherry? It must have been a wild time to be a gamer in 80s Britain, and SPECCY NATION is a sugar rush style whirl through that crazy era. Or maybe it's just the cooking sherry I've been nipping.

Like an exhibit catalog of worlds lost and/or forgotten

The cover of this book is perfect, suggesting images on the wall of some gallery somewhere. Page after page, you're introduced to the complex and entirely-less-than-complex stories behind the games of the ZX Spectrum. What really makes this book stand out is the attention paid to the evolution of story and game play from one game to the next. An idea is tried out once, doesn't completely work, but then moves on to the next where it's more fully realized. Also, Whitehead brings in the real world influences on these games, showing how each is emblematic of a moment in the culture at large. Only a few pages into "Speccy Nation" and the author has refuted American film critic Roger Ebert's assertion that "video games are not art." Well done!

Didn't think i was getting this...

I thought that this book was a history of the ZX Spectrum platform. Rather, the book was more or less a showcase of the most popular and well known games of the ZX Era. Granted, some of the passages made me interested about the games that were talked about. I should have gotten the sample to get a feel what this book was like. If you want to read about ZX games, then this is the book for you, but if you wish to learn about the conception and the history of the ZX Spectrum platform, you'd be better looking somewhere else.
