Mathematician Extraordinary!

This book is a gold mine for those who want to learn more about N. H. Abel's life and time. Oystein Ore makes a great job exposing Abel's intimate life, there's a lot of fragments cited from Abel's correspondency with his acquainted people, namely, Crelle, Holmboe, Keilheau, Boek, Hansteen, Legrende, his beloved Christine Kamp and many others. This book is not about Abel's scientific life, but about his life, his ancestors, his good and bad times. I think one can read about Abel's scientific advances in Carl Anton Bjerknes's biography on Abel: Niels-Henrik Abel: Tableau de sa vie et de son action scientifique (Cambridge Library Collection - Mathematics) (French Edition). Besides, one major topic in Ore's book is the development of Abel and Jacobi's competition to publish breakthoughs in equation theory and elliptic equations. These young men, although they lived a very short life span, they did more than many other mathematicians; specially Abel, whose name was used to name many things after him.

In conclusion, Abel is one of the most humble, noble, and recognized scientifics of all times, everyone interested in Abel's life or in history of mathematics should read this fine book. And read it twice!

This should be the first WCF book you get

You may want to acquire various other WCF books for depth, but if you're just getting started with WCF, this is the book you want. There isn't another book out there that compares to it. It's cleanly written and nicely balances conceptual material on service orientation with the practicalities of Windows Communication Foundation.

Many other books on WCF take the form of a "brain dump" on WCF features, or get bogged down in conceptual discussion of Service Oriented Architecture. Instead, Ms. Bustamante has a very clear, logical path from simple WCF features to more complex. You won't be overwhelmed early, but you will eventually get to most of the advanced features you'll likely need. Other books, such as Juval Lowy's Programming WCF Services (Programming), can pick up at that point for the really advanced topics.

Many of the chapters contain step-by-step labs, and you can get working end results from the author's web site. They start easy and build nicely through more complex concepts.

The sample code in the book is in C#, but if you happen to be a Visual Basic developer (as I am), you're not left out. Many of the labs and samples are also available in VB on the author's web site.

The book was unfortunately published too early to include definite coverage of the Visual Studio 2008 features for automatically generating some of the code you need to use WCF. Those capabilities are in the Visual Studio 2008 beta now and will be released in the next few months. Some of the labs could have been simplified by using those Visual Studio features. But, on the positive side, working through the labs in more detail will give you a more in-depth understanding of the subject and enable you to use the Visual Studio features more effectively.

Be Sure To Get The Correct Printing

There were two printings of the first edition. The 2nd printing has all the labs and examples in VS2008. The first printing uses VS2005. I ordered this book from Amazon well after the 2nd printing was out (I ordered the book in late April 2009...the 2nd printing was in Aug 2008)...BUT...Amazon still sent me the first printing which is less than helpful given that our office has moved to VS2008.

You can get an update of Chapter 1 from the author's blog site. But you will not be able to see updates to the remainder of the book. You should insist that Amazon tell you which print version you're getting before having this book shipped.

A 'must buy' for WCF

I have trawled round quite few books, articles, samples etc which all promised instant knowledge of WCF. Fortunately I came across Michele's book before I gave up in despair. I found the style just refreshing; it talked you through the concepts in bite-sized chunks and never tried to swamp you in technology.
Not just that, but Hands-On-Labs as well; yes, labs that work out of the box and demonstrate the principal at issue. Not just labs but solutions too that actually work. It does exactly what it says on the tin.
I've found this "tell it how it is and provide working samples" to be a real novelty in the WCF space.
If you want to get WCF-competent, then get this book. If you want to trash around in the dark for a few more weeks, then there's plenty of others I could suggest.

Know What to Expect

Upfront it must be said that I have read all of Simon Goddard's music related books, most notably his books on Morrissey and The Smiths and loved those. His book analyzing every song in The Smiths cannon is especially great and gives the songs the attention they deserve.

Ziggyology, on the other hand, is a different beast but it is mainly my fault. I was expecting a full length biography of David Bowie circa 1971-1973 with extreme detail on the Ziggy-era songs and concerts. An academic 33 1/3 book if you will. But, no. This is a biography of Ziggy Stardust as it says on the cover and in the preface to the book. Of course as Ziggy Stardust was an extention of David Bowie 'or was it the other way around?' there is plenty of Bowie information packed in here, but for fans already very familiar with Bowie's work and biography, there is not much to be garnered. I also did not enjoy the hokey tone of the book. Having said all of that, it does make for an interesting read and Goddard is clearly a giant Bowie fan and that shines through. Just know what to expect; this is not a Bowie book! This is a Ziggy Stardust book!

The narrative is hokey, but you can tell the author knows his Ziggy facts. Interesting how he develops all of the ingredients to make our Cosmic Messiah. Ziggy Rules!

This is a very nicely written overview of biological imaging techniques. Explanations on a few of the topics are a bit overly technical but all in all, the writing is straightforward and clear. A good option for biologists in college and beyond.

Optical Imaging Techniques in Cell Biology (by Guy Cox)

Cell biology ― a branch of biology in which researchers explore the various structures and functions of the cell ― is unimaginable without the use of imaging techniques. In the Introduction of his book, Guy Cox briefly reviews the historical events that led to the development of simple and compound microscopes as well as to sophisticated imaging techniques such as fluorescence-, phase contrast-, confocal-, and multiphoton microscopy. He also mentions issues in optical imaging that arose with spherical aberration, resolution, diffraction, and the theoretical limit imposed by the wavelength of light.
In the following chapter (Chapter 1), Cox provides in-depth information about the theory behind, the components of, and the practice of using the light microscope. He then turns his attention to optical contrasting techniques such as phase- and differential-interference-contrast (Chapter 2), fluorescence microscopic methods (Chapter 3), and issues in image capturing such as choice of film, camera, and filter (Chapter 4).
The next three chapters are devoted to confocal microscopy, including the use of various lasers as the light source (Chapter 5), the digital image acquisition methodology (Chapter 6), and the problems an investigator can encounter with aberration (Chapter 7). The eighth chapter is about nonlinear microscopy, using the example of multiphoton microscopy. In Chapter 9, he talks about the advantages of using high-speed confocal microscopy in cell biology. This is followed by a chapter about the deconvolution and image processing in confocal microscopy.
In Chapter 11, Cox describes three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques. He wrote: “We believe that we see the world in three dimensions. This is not really so ― rather, we interpret the world in three dimensions.” He subsequently describes stereoscopy and the 3-D reconstruction of the image. Green fluorescent protein (GFP) is the topic of Chapter 12. Cox points out that this quite stable protein (it can survive relatively harsh treatment conditions in the laboratory) has revolutionized cell biology in that it can be used as “an expressible marker that is directly visible in the fluorescence microscope.” In Chapter 13, he discusses fluorescent staining (with immunolabeling) for cell components and compartments, and in Chapter 14, quantitative fluorescence, including issues associated with fluorescence intensity measurements and membrane potential of the dyes. In the fifteenth chapter, Cox introduces the reader to advanced fluorescence techniques, including fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM)) and fluorescence resonant energy transfer (FRET). In the final chapter (Chapter 16), he summarizes the developments in optical microscopy and then takes a closer look at scanning probe microscopy and atomic force microscopy, to name a few.
I like that Cox added four appendices, in which he discusses the important issue of microscope care and maintenance (Appendix 1), ways of keeping cells alive under the microscope (Appendix 2), antibody labeling of plant and animal cells (Appendix 3), and image processing with ImageJ, an image processing software program (Appendix 4). The book also contains a functional 10-pages index, but lacks a glossary, which I believe would have been helpful to the reader. Nevertheless, this is a fascinating book, a “must-have” for any microscopist working with the basic unit of life: the cell. Furthermore, I believe that microscopy facilities as well as life science libraries should carry a copy of this important book.

Really an osasis of information that is easy to follow and read

I have read so many 2,000-paged textbooks before on other animals, and all of them were not written well; it kept repeating and contradicting itself with lots of unnecessary material.

However, this book was amazing. I learned so much and everything tied together so well. Then again, I'm not new to herpetology, so that might be a difference (I breed multiple species colubrids and anurans).

Mr. Oakes is currently an Educational Consultant and was formerly Director of Respiratory Care, VA Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; Educational Coordinator/Instructor, Respiratory Care Department, Children's Hospital National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; and Director of Clinical Education, Respiratory Care Program, Columbia Union College, Takoma Park, MD. Mr. Oakes has been in the Respiratory field for over 28 years and has over 14 years of teaching experience including one-, two-, and four-year advanced Respiratory Care programs.

Hard to find the information that I need in this book

I am very diappointed in this book. I am a respiratory therapy student who just finished her PICU rotation at a major children's hospital. I bought this book with the hope that it would help me find the information that I need while at clinical. It probably has most of the information that I need, but I just can't find it. I confess that I am used to the tabs of the PDQ respiratory reference book, but I think that I could get used to the lack of tabs if there was just an adequate index.

Let's say that you want to look up intubation equipment sizes or suction catheter sizes. Not listed in the index, or the appendix. You have to find that information buried in the critical care section. But on the positive side, if you need to quickly get the low-down on Chantix (a smoking cessation drug), that IS listed in the index. Unfortunately, questions about Chantix never really came up in the PICU or the NICU.

Oddly, there is a section included on CPR in this book. Really? I think that if you're the type of person to buy a respiratory care reference book, you probably don't need to read the flow chart for CPR. There is a lot of good information about pediatric medications, though.

For the high price of $25, this book simply was not worth it to me.

Im an RT and looking up information on the fly with this book to reference is great!! love the color pages and different sections layed out... is good for a student or an seasoned RT that wants to just touch up on information that they may need to look up that they have not used in a while! GREAT for all!

Must have for all NICU and Neonatal RTs

This was recommended to me by an old time NiCU nurse and once a NICU nurse has proven they know what they are talking about, I listen. It would be insane not to. I got it in prep for my test but since my hospital doesn't have dedicated RTs, this book is staying in my pocket for good. My friend still carries hers and it is tattered but I'm sure just as useful
