The Windows shell provides much of the look and feel of the Windows 98/Windows NT 4 desktop, and it offers many new possibilities for writing better programs. Visual C++ 6 Windows Shell Programming provides an excellent guide to understanding and programming the Windows shell, in a book filled with expert tips and useful code.

The book begins with the basics of the Windows desktop and taskbar and gives an overview of programming techniques. Besides the simpler shell C API, there are COM objects for manipulating the shell. Next the book covers file programming, such as finding and copying files, before moving on to explain how to modify shortcuts. The author presents multiple techniques for opening new programs and documents and shows how to modify the system icon tray.

Later, the book turns to Windows shell COM objects and looks at working with folders and other desktop objects. Material on the Windows Scripting Host (for batch processing) is also very useful. The author creates a sample Windows metafile (.WMF) viewer as a fuller example. The book closes with some notable material on the new Web View feature in Windows 98.

Even if you don't plan on programming extensively with the Windows shell, the material in this book can demystify what the shell is and how it operates. About the Author
Dino Esposito is a trainer and a consultant who specializes in Windows and COM programming. He works for Infomedia Communications, writing and teaching seminars on Win32 programming, VB, and HTML. Has an extensive experience developing commercial Windows-based software, especially for the photography world. He's a regular contributor to Microsoft Interactive Developer and Windows Developer's Journal and writes occasionally also for Windows Tech Journal.

I don't know what I was thinking when I purchased this book. It's waaay outdated (I'm the first reviewer in a decade or so). Some books, like Petzold's from around this time, still work: this one doesn't.

Visual C++ Windows Shell Programming

I am a semi-advanced self taught C++ programmer. I use Borland's C++ Builder programming IDE. I found this book to be extremely valuable. It has provided me with more information on the pride and pitfalls of Windows 98/NT's shell implementation and API than I would've imagined. This is not a beginner's book. It won't hold your hand to get you through it's content. You will need a firm grasp of the Windows messaging system. Knowledge of and experience with the Win32 API is also important. While I am weak on COM technology (does it really provide things that can't be done in simpler ways, or are we just stuck with it?) I found that I could understand what was going on by (loosely) relating the COM objects and namespace extensions to C++ classes. This book does contain some typos and mistakes. You will have to know enough to spot them or else spend time on the author's erratta web page (haven't been there yet myself). This leads me to believe that the source code download isn't comprised of exactly the same code that's in the book. All in all, I truly wish I'd have found this book sooner. It could've saved me a great deal of time searching through many different resources for the answers to some of my recently overcome programming frustrations. I'm only halfway through the book and am already writing more robust applications. Who knew that my system tray based application would've been left (past tense) memory resident but unreachable whenever the Windows Shell was restarted! If you're serious about living with Windows...if you need to register an application or file type...if you want to use SHBrowseForFolder() better...if you can't figure out why the damned thing won't work and it's 3:00 am...BUY THIS BOOK.

Just what I was looking for

I was afraid I wouldn't get it before the long July 4 weekend.
Ordered on Jun 7th (Estimated delivery was Jul 3rd - 25th). They shipped it out Jun 9th and I got it Jun 19 (I'm in the US).
Nice quality paper. 60lb-80lb. matte paper for inserts and glossy chrome coated cover. Songs were arranged by others and not Maestro Sakamoto himself but a quick read thru it looked like the real deal to me. Looks like a compilation songs taken from different sources/books (which makes it even richer)
Intermediate to Advanced level. Even has chord symbols. I'd say yes!

like the 2013 version

I am preparing for a recital and have not started sight reading from this score collection just yet, but this piano score collection, like the 2013 version, seems to be an exceptional compilation for any Sakamoto enthusiast. In my search, there were two piano score collections to choose from via Amazon.com and not knowing which one to choose, I purchased both. I am glad I did so, as each collection has something the other does not. For example, in comparing with the "Piano Solo Sakamoto Ryuichi Piano Collection (Piano Solo) [Sheet Music] [JAPANESE EDITION] [JE] sheet music - 2013" version, this version does NOT have "The End of Asia," which until my purchase of the other version, I did not realize that there was an arrangement prepared for it. However, this version includes "Tibetan Dance," "Reversing," and "A Flower Is Not A Flower." "Reversing" is an underrated gem. The major favorites are here as well, such as "Tong Poo," "Thousand Knives," and "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," just to name a few. The arrangements in this collection seem more approachable (less intimidating) and "cleaner" as well, with more English print overall...

If you're a Ryuichi Sakamoto fan and you want to learn his music, this is one of the best piano books to buy because it has majority of his greatest hits. His piano sheets is challenging but it is also very enjoyable to learn and play!

Useful overview of zebrafish as a laboratory animal

This book is primarily aimed at professional scientists and lab technicians. I don't belong to any of those groups - I keep fish at home as a hobby, and I enjoy reading and writing about them. Still, I found the book useful. It gives a nice, fairly compact overview of existing knowledge about zebrafish biology and provided several insights that made me see the zebrafish in my own aquarium in a new light. From the more practical chapters I also got some fresh ideas about how to care for my zebrafish (even if I don't think the very high densities of fish in lab tanks are at all appropriate for a home aquarium). There is useful and fairly detailed information here about everything from the natural habitat and diet of wild zebrafish to common diseases among zebrafish in captivity. So I would recommend the book for aquarium keepers who have a strong interest in zebrafish or danios in general, and for anyone who want a detailed understanding of how zebrafish are kept as a lab animal. The problem is the price tag, obviously. The book is aimed at libraries and labs, and such organizations are willing to pay a lot more for useful books than most interested individuals.

The watercolor illustrations are cleverly peopled with whale watchers of all ages who watch from their boats, from atop bridges, and from the banks as Humphrey splashes and spouts his way through the pages. Richard Hall is an award-winning TV and film producer and the president of Great Blue Productions in Los Angeles.

Hanako Wakiyama was born in Tokyo and moved with her family to California as a teenager. She is a published author and an illustrator of children's books. Her credits include From Dawn to Dreams: Poems for Busy Babies, Best Pet of All [Modern Gems Edition], Goldie Locks Has Chicken Pox, Little Bo Peep Can't Get to Sleep.

The best children's book ever written about whales

I read this book as a kid and just purchased a copy for my three year old nephew. I think the target age for this book is probably a little higher, but he's a bit ahead of the curve in that regard so I'm thinking he's going to enjoy it.

This book has a lot going for it, including finely detailed illustration and writing, but the best part is that it's both true and accurate. As usual, truth is even better than fiction. It's a great account of the bizarre situation, even for adults.

A wonderful story

Bought this for my sons 7th birthday. I needed it because we had been making weekly trips to the library to check this book out. We read it all the time. Truly a wonderful story about how amazing whales are. I also bought him a plush whale that looked just like Humphrey in the story. He loved the book and the stuffed whale.

Not Genius at all, more like Good and very Pretty

Love the idea of this book and several things work out. But it has not proven itself to be a Genius book- to use that title, you need to have an ironclad bullet proof believe that every recipe is not only flawless but also delicious. The chicken thighs with lemon were very nice, the crispy skinned fish was great...but then the black pepper tofu? Egads. And I have many books by Yotam Ottolenghi, who this recipe is from. A tofu stir fry dish with 11 tbsps of butter? Not only is it heavy handed and really unappealing, but the tofu tastes bizarre every single bite b/c it tastes buttery! Buttery tofu??? I looked up his recipe online and in another website, there were 20 or so reviews and every single one had edited his recipe in a variety of ways to make it 'better'. So how can it be 'genius'? If this book were called "Favorites", I would judge less. I am happy I bought it but more because I am a fan of Food52 and appreciate their effort to provide tips or good ideas. But not because this book is actually full of genius recipes. It's pretty and nice and a few things have been a nice surprise. And others have been definitively disappointing.

WOW ! WOW! WOW! What a book!!!!

This is a fantastic cook book for cooks that like to try some very different food preparations. The recipe's authorS comments about just about every recipe is worth the reading alone. Some of the recipe ingredients called for are just not available where I live but I know enough about cooking to work in a substitute. Something as simple as frying an egg was a recipe that I will forever use. How about the cauliflower soup and just plain water added? "who da thought?" If you are a cook that likes a little challenge and prepare something different, you gotta have this book, FOOD52 GENIUS RECIPES; 100 RECIPES THAT WILL ETC.

I first heard about this book via some friends in social median, then came across a mention of it on a blog I frequent, and decided to purchase based on the street buzz and a need for a little kitchen inspiration. From the very first recipe I was hooked...on something as simple as fried eggs. What is interesting here are the paradigm shifts delivered to what I'll call 'typical fare' transforming a tired treatment to something revolutionarily simple. Excellent Overview of the UN's Attempts at Peace Operations

Professors Michael Doyle and Nick Sambanis have 'tag-teamed' to present an excellent reference work on the UN's attempts at Peace operations. Earlier works have set the scene in an introductory fashion, however this book examines in methodical detail why certain UN peace operations have succeeded and others have not been so successful.

The authors use extensive data and quantitative measures in order to examine every civil war since the end of the Second World War to establish why conflicts occur. I was particularly impressed at the level of statistical analysis employed; especially their concept of the 'Triangle of Peace'to examine such variables as the degree of hostility, local capacities in the country involved in conflict and how international capacities assist in the post-conflict processes.

The data supports the authors' arguments that the UN is not so good at attempting to enter existing conflicts in a bid to try and stop them. The UN seems more suited at provision of various support specialities in rebuilding after the conflict is over. The authors also provide extensive comparison of UN Missions operating under Chapter Seven and Six of the UN Charter. They contend that a UN Mission is successful only when supported with a good mandate and adequate resources. Comparison of the successes (East Timor and Cambodia) are contrasted with not-so-successful ventures such as Somalia, Rwanda and Cyprus.

I recommend this book to the student of UN peace operations, as well as researchers of this topic, as the authors give substantial data and research methodology techniques in their outline of the various case studies contained within. My one dismay in this book is that, even though it was released two years ago, it does not cover the more recent Missions such as Ethiopia-Eritrea and Sudan. An updated edition is hoped for!

In summary, a great referral source; rich in data and references. Good, authorative explanations on UN peace operations with a wealth of detail and additional reading sources cited in the bibliography contained at the back of the book. Well done, Professors Doyle and Sambanis!

Highly recommended. I wish I had this book two years ago

I really liked this book, for the following reasons:
1. It is a great introduction to web scraping. The reader is given confidence to use well-known Python packages such as BeautifulSoup and get useful results from scraping webpages in a very short time.
2. Where to go after learning the basics? - the author describes the tools, techniques and frameworks to use for scraping dynamic websites, including code examples. This is the most challenging part of the book because it frequently involves combining tools and the reader will have to get his/her hands dirty and learn by doing also. This is reasonable since different websites present different challenges.
3. I liked the author's writing style. She favors simple explanations, identifies potential pitfalls and makes clear, technical recommendations based on her experience.

Highly recommended. I wish I had this book two years ago.

I can finally web scrape, and you can too with this book!

After learning the basics of Python I really struggled to dig into a project. Programming, just like a foreign language, leaves your memory quickly if you don't use it. I had tried web scraping with several video tutorials, but couldn't work through the tutorials to the point of understanding how to build one myself. Then...I got Ryan Mitchell's book. This book sets you up with not only the basics, but also more advanced techniques that you'll need to really build out your scraper. Ryan touches on other subjects such as using a database, working around data hidden in Javascript, cleaning up data, using NLPT, and more. You'll get a solid foundation to launch into your own Web Scraping project, and learn just enough about additional topics (like MySql) to integrate them into your scraper. I really appreciate how Ryan made this approachable for both a Python beginner, and for an intermediate user.

This is a truly excellent book. It is the closest I have seen in a book to the experience of sitting with a friendly, approachable expert who is ready to answer your questions intelligently and in a supportive way. You need the very basics of Python as can be learned from the Pycharm educational version but everything else is provided.
