Ion Boldea is a professor of electrical engineering at the University Politehnica Timişoara, Romania. Read instructions before starting an orchard!

So You Want to Start a Nursery is a must read for any one who has that little idea niggling at the back of their brain that a nursery might be the thing to bring a little extra cash. Don't think for a minute that you can just stick any old fruit trees into the ground and soon you will have mega money flowing in. WRONG!

This book is an eye opener in that you have to find the right area on your property, find out what nutrients your soil needs, research the type of trees are suitable for your area, what kind of fertilizers to use (whether you want to organic or not), what kind of pest control you want to use and when and how often to spray, and one of the most important items is learning how to prune your particular kind of tree. Apple, peach, pear and plum are all different.

Also, and not a must, is available water for irrigation. While the trees are small and you don't have too many, buckets with holes drilled in the bottom can be used but you will need to figure out something else if you decide to have very many trees and nice big healthy fruit.

This little book goes through all phases and is an eye opener for the budding (no pun intended) fruit tree farmer. It has good sound advice and is a nice addition to your gardening library.

Why only 4 stars: I purchased this book with the idea of STARTING a nursery. The classical would-be businessman who wants to start a business from scratch, being not wealthy enough to start a fully-fledged nursery with all the equipment installed and operating in a short while. My expectation was how to start a small business using the space in my yard, and learn to proceed from that point onward, step-by-step. To my surprise, the author has proceeded too quickly to the automation process, the climate control, the mansion-sized greenhouses and all the costly equipment of a factory employing dozens of employees. This has made me lose track too quickly and I didn't follow it up.

Why 4 stars: After all, the book describes the challenges of running a nursery in a clear and realistic manner. The wealthier-than-myself reader who has enough land to set-up one, will find this book quite useful. I use organic approaches which largely eliminate most of the pests and diseases, but if you're the more conventional grower, the book may still help you to understand the challenges involved.

Chock full of information and should be required reading for anyone considering the nursery business. Although thorough enough for serious or large scale nurseries, the wisdoms so generously shared in this book are useful, and sometimes applicable to even the smallest backyard nursery. If you are even contemplating starting a nursery, of any size, the best business decision you'll make will be reading this book cover to cover with high lighter in hand. I learned so much from this book, I firmly believe it will pay for itself over and over: by helping me prevent common & potential oversights and mistakes, with time, money and heart ache saving advice, and tips to improve, promote and prosper my business.

Truly Enlightening!

"The Straight-Up Truth About Down -Low" is truly enlightening. This is a book that I would recommend that not only African-American women, but for every woman to read! The down low "culture" is not a fad that only affect these men but can also infect the women that they are involved with. This book provides hope and restoration for those who have been through this unfortunate experience and it also teaches women who may have never been through the situations discussed in the book- what to look for and how to protect themselves. I appreciate the passion and vulnerability of the author, Joy Marie and her heart to help women overcome the devastation of a husband or boyfriend who are on the down-low. Again, every young girl and woman should read this book. We live in a different society where nothing is impossible and everything is now fathomable. People perish for the lack of knowledge. still not sure

The book helped A LOT, but I'm still not sure about the guy that I'm dating. In the 2nd part where it talks about "warning signs" the only one that matches him is the shaving of the hair...his reason is "hair is too hot", which matches his daily life, he seems to always be hot, and loves really cold areas.
With that all said I think I will follow my STRONG SUSPICION,WOMENS INTUITION, and leave this guy alone.

Grade 4 Up—In 1957, Little Rock faces a split populace as it attempts to integrate a high school after the Brown v. Board of Education ruling. This book focuses on two fictional teens: Will McNally, the white son of a local attorney, and Thomas Johnson, the black son of his domestic help. Their tenuous friendship is the lens for the conflict as each teen wrestles with the larger social implications of the Supreme Court decision. While the artwork is flat and the faces overly simplified so as to mute expression, details of fashion and decor help to emphasize the setting. Most evocative is the frequent depiction of African Americans silently doing menial jobs while the discussion of their roles and rights happens around them. A variety of perspectives and concerns are expressed, and only Will's grandfather comes across as a straw man for racism. The debates have an easy, conversational flow, and what could be a staid reenactment of a civics lesson takes on the character of an actual event. There is a difficult balance required while creating composite characters to work alongside actual participants and not supplant their historical roles. MARSHALL POE is a professor, writer, and consultant. After earning his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, he taught for a decade at Harvard University. Never forget!

This graphic novel, which is identified as a work of "historical fiction", reminds us of the personal risks taken by blacks and whites in the Southern US in order to integrate their schools. Brown vs. Board of Education is a fait accompli at the beginning of the book, and President Eisenhower finally demands that it be complied with by the end.

In between we have the opportunity to meet two families, one black, one white, whose sons become friends and are self-sacrificing enough to take the lead in the integration fight. In the process, we are reminded that there was no unanimity within the races: many whites favored integration, and many blacks resisted it. The story resonates with a more contemporary civil rights fight, that for gay rights, in that immigration opponents of both races find justification fir continued segregation in the Bible (without being able to cite anything, of course) and in what one character deems "God's will".

It is unfortunate that except for NAACP leader Daisy Bates, it is women who stand back while the men take charge, on both sides. This may well reflect the typical family structure of the day, but these are fictional characters, so it really wasn't required to tell the story.

What is most disturbing about this book is that, despite its subject--the effort to obtain quality education for all--a book stated as being for middle schoolers is in the graphic novel format, as if nothing but a comic could hold their interest.

5+ Star Graphical Look at One of Educations Defining Moments

William and Thomas have several things in common - they love teasing their baby sisters, enjoy playing baseball, and will attend the same high school. However, they have a major difference - William is white and Thomas is black. They want to be friends but the integration of Central High has tensions running high. It was during an after school altercation that William and Thomas see their friendship means more than anything else. William risks everything to come to the aid of Thomas and in doing so they educate themselves, their family and the kids that know them. Integration was difficult but cultural understanding is done one family at a time.

I was totally blown away by this book. Now don't get me wrong, I read as many children's books as others because I'm a mother of two elementary students. But this book transformed a historical moment into a moving graphical novel. The graphics (much like a comic strip) gives added dimension to the historical nature of the story. My kids were totally engrossed in the story and they LOVED it. They found something different to talk about in every frame (faces, facts, figures, family, and friends). The story was familiar to them because we visited Central High on one of our family vacations and this book was right on track. I know what I will be giving for gifts over the next year, copies of LITTLE ROCK NINE, for all the children that I know.

Compared with other histories of 20th-century Chinese literature, this co-authored book is carefully researched with a complete scholarly apparatus, including a Chinese-character glossary of titles and authors, fluidly and dispassionately written, and comprehensive. It should ordinarily be the first reference work a person would turn to if searching for more information about a given period or particular writerin 20th-century China--with the exception of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Overseas Chinese (ethnic Chinese writers residing abroad), which are outside the book's purview.
