Enchanted Again: Nursery Rhymes Become Dark Erotica

After enjoying the sumptuous Enchanted: Erotic Bedtime Stories for Women, I was ready to once again experience Nancy Madore’s themed erotica for women. The first collection presented thirteen short story retellings of classic fairy tales with an erotic yet tasteful and sensitive bent. Based upon popular demand and high sales, Madore created the second short story book, Enchanted Again: More Erotic Bedtime Stories for Women this time presenting modern stories based upon classic nursery rhymes. The eloquent language and lavish old world atmosphere is missing, however, as this collection of stories presents modern narrative with a decidedly dark side, blending Gone Girl like female protagonists engaged in elaborate cunning and sensual desire to dupe or overcome their chauvinistic or simple minded male counterparts. Focusing more on twisted stories with some sex scenes, Enchanted Again has enough unique appeal to awaken the story teller and the rubbernecker in all of us, but not the mostly dormant libido which is thwarted by such dark depictions of human nature.

The first story, “Birds of a Feather,” starts the shocking atmosphere, so completely different in tone and writing style from the first compilation. Pansy, a put upon wife, tolerates her slovenly, arrogant cop husband while having a gratuitously weird affair involving shaming and kinky sex with a suspected murderer. Torn between her husband and lover, Pansy hatches a crime of her very own, leaving readers open mouthed and turned off. As a story, the tale works, building tension and twisting the plot to deliver a real kicker. However, the scene of sex with a devilish gargoyle statue and the “punishment play” leave readers repulsed by the sex. Pansy herself, while psychologically alluring as an unpredictable villain, is completely devoid of appeal as our vicarious heroine.

“Peter, Peter” follows the entire twisted relationship theme as a man finds the potential of his wife’s continual cheating so painful that he attempts to make the sex better to keep the woman he loves. The manipulative nature of the tale (the woman does this on purpose) and the male perspective, showing his desperation and hurt, is enough to make even non-sensitive readers grit their teeth. The answer to chauvinism is not to promote an equally usurious and uncaring prospective from the female side.

“Hot Cross Buns” delves into the typical scandalous S&M type relationship so aggrandized by Fifty Shades of Grey. While tastefully done and probably well rendered, the complete male domination theme will only prove attractive to a certain few. Personally, I find it derogatory to both participants and unappealing, especially considering how long the story lasted.

As for stories that I found more appealing, “Curly Locks,” while just as dark as the others, presented a more interesting supernatural twist ; an ungrateful woman, constantly complaining about her attentive husband and perfect life is duped by another woman who uses sorcery to switch bodies and claim the man she has always wanted. “Georgie Porgie” and “Humpty” involve relationships where the playboy dominates. In each case, the woman comes to a conclusion that lifts her out of the relationship and in one case, a little magic wreaks some much desired revenge. “Desperate Dan” involves a man who seeks only to pleasure woman through the creation of various mechanical devices which he drops off unsolicited at their homes. Yes, all certainly dark, but appealing on some levels and imaginative.

While Enchanted Again delivers some intriguing story lines, the erotic elements are diminished by the darkness of the tales. The nursery rhymes themselves are a thematic afterthought that doesn’t really apply; the writing, while sufficient, doesn’t mimic the fairy tale charm of the first erotic short story anthology. While readers won’t find themselves bored, they won’t be titillated either.

Enchanted Again, NOT

There is nothing enchanted about this book, especially not again. There is nothing erotica about this book and these are not bed time stories for women or men. I feel very deceived the publisher or author totally misrepresented this book. Most of these stories are about broken people or broken relationships. I enjoyed book one Enchanted it lived up to what was offered. I have a hard time giving this book a star but if I don't I'm sure no one will ever see this review.

Disappointed

This is classified as an "erotic novel", but it's anything but! The small sex scenes were unimaginative, and the story lines quite boring. Her first book, "Enchanted", took fairy tale stories and gave them an erotic, arousing twist. "Enchanted Again" takes nursery rhyme stories and builds boring plots with quick sex scenes. I cannot imagine how this was allowed to be called sensual. It may not have been so disappointing if it wasn't followed by the first set of erotic fairy-tale stories. As it is, the whole concept to this sequel was extremely disappointing.

In this vivid work, which shares its title with a 2002 documentary Vega produced, two tales flawlessly merge: one recalls an Afro–Puerto Rican girl's upbringing in 1950s Spanish Harlem; the other explains the background for the author's eventual status as a priestess of the Santeria/Lucumi religion. What could have been a familiar coming-of-age story is made fresh with Vega's painterly detail and use of background music (Celia Cruz, Machito and Tito Puente's sounds are present throughout). The sorrows of early school ("the classroom was a joyless cell") give way to double-dutch jumping, puberty, Vega's first crush and her emerging interest in preserving her family's traditions. "Music," her grandmother Abuela, an espiritista (a sort of spiritual psychic), tells her, "is the food of the soul, and the right music calls the spirits." At Abuela's apartment, Vega learns of the orishas (gods and goddesses) and observes Abuela's b�veda (altar); together, they visit the bot�nica for healing oils. Lovelorn at 14, Vega confides in Abuela, who summons a spirit named Juango to command her body. "Trying to understand Juango was difficult enough, but talking about sex with a spirit possessing my grandmother's body was startling." And thus the author's future path begins. The spiritual and musical journey Vega takes readers on is informative and inspiring, even for the uninitiated.

Adult/High School–"Cotito" was the favorite of her grandmother, a high priestess of the Yoruba religion, whom she helped tend her altar. She accompanied Abuela to the botanica in East Harlem and witnessed the occasional possession by spirits. As she grew older, Vega found that these traditions could suffocate as well as nurture. Her parents' acceptance of machismo led to a double standard in the treatment of brother Chachito and his sisters. Mami, a trained nurse, was not to work outside the home because such women "get ideas" and cheat on their husbands. When she disobeyed, Papi's anger and violence were said to be the result of his love. Cotito silently decided that she didn't want such a love, just as she refused to lie to cover for her brother's philandering. Racism was found in the outside world (school, police) and at home: the children were expected to marry lighter-skinned Latinos, and Chachito jokingly called Cotito a "real African." Smart and perceptive, she became a strong young woman, and worked steadily toward her goal of becoming a teacher. At the mostly white arts high school, she and an African-American friend demanded that music from their cultures be included in music appreciation class. While rejecting the negative, she embraced the many positive aspects of her heritage and the love of her family. Cotito is as frank about her own shortcomings as she is about those of others. Coming-of-age stories chronicling the struggles of first-generation Latinas are not in short supply, and some clunky phrasings ("Memories are the musical notes that form the composition of our souls") suggest that Vega's training in writing has been secondary to her work as a scholar and priestess of Santeria. Marta Moreno Vega Breaks It Down!!!

"When the Spirits Dance Mambo: Growing Up Nuyorican in El Barrio" is an excellent read in my opinion. As a student of African spirituality I gathered so much information from reading this book and from the words of wisdom Ms.Vega so lovingly remembers from her Abuela. I got a notebook and a pen and diligently took notes on such things as how to spiritually cleanse a house and what incense to use to keep unwanted spirits away. Like a previous reader I cried at the end of the book especially since Ms.Vega is the only one in her nuclear family left; all of her immediate family is now in the spirit world and in the case of her older sister,Socorro there is no date or details of her untimely death. Ms.Vega skillfully depicts in her memoir the co-existence of both the spirit and the human worlds and shows us that even though loved ones have passed on they are still here to protect us. This book really shows the importance of the human spirit in our family and communities which seemed so prevalent in the 1950's and 1960's when Ms.Vega grew up in El Barrio but is sadly lacking in families and communties today destroyed by drugs and violence. I especially liked Ms.Vega's descriptions of how spirit guides and the spirits themselves possess a "medium" of which abuela is one and how the Puerto Rican families in El Barrio really relied on the wisdom and guidance of these spirit guides. This book also shows how music and spirit are entertwined whether used in worshipping the African dieties are on the stages of major concert halls like the Palladium and Apollo Theaters. This memoir is one that is unique amongst most family memoirs because this one focuses on ancestral and familial spiritual ties that make us who we are. Very well done Ms.Moreno.

a fantastic, unique memoir...

Kudos to Marta Moreno Vega for this beautifully written, heartfelt memoir. When the Spirits Dance Mambo brings to life the hopes and dreams of Puerto Ricans living in East Harlem in the 50s and 60s. The book opens with young Marta and her sister Chachita huddled under the bed covers with a telephone. Their brother is on the line, and he's at the Palladium club, listening to live mambo music by some of the worlds best musicians. He holds up the receiver of the pay phone so his sisters can experience the music. In Marta's world, the mambo, and the other songs and rhythms of the Carribean, is everything. Her elderly grandmother--the most extraordinary character in this book--tells her that music is the connection between people and the spirits who guide and protect them. Her parents--a hard-working immigrant couple--are transformed into an elegant lady and gentleman when they dance together in the family's living room.

This memoir is an excellent coming-of-age story that reminded me a little of Esmeralda Santiago's When I was Puerto Rican, but the emphasis on music, and on the mystic Santeria religion, makes it a much more rewarding read. You come to know and love the Morenos and especially Marta's abuela. It's an amazing portrait of one author's past told through words and music. I highly recommend this book.

excellent real-life story

I actually cried at the end of this book. I bought it the day it went on sale and read it pretty much into the night. Marta Vega's story is both unique and universal. This book tells the story of her growing up in Spanish Harlem (El Barrio) and portrays the loving, close-knit working class who raised her. Her mama and abuela come across as very strong, resilient women, particularly her grandmother, who was an amazing soul. The book's title takes its name from the Latin/Island music that played everywhere in their neighborhood and home, and the orishas--spirit guardians--who Marta learned about from her grandmother. This is a very memorable, moving book. READ IT!

Paris Buttfield-Addison is a producer and co-founder at Secret Lab, a mobile development studio based in beautiful Hobart, Australia. Secret Lab builds games for mobile devices, and primarily for children, such as the AIMIA winning (2014) ABC Play School apps for iPad.

Finally, in essays such as "Domestication of Being" and the "Rules for the Human Park," which incited an international controversy around the time of its publication and has been translated afresh for this volume, Sloterdijk develops some of his most intriguing and important ideas on anthropogenesis, humanism, technology, and genetic engineering.

this book is not just an introduction to Heidegger but also a introduction to some of the questions asked in philosophy today

This is an interesting book. After reading some of the articles, I feel that I have gotten a sense of what is going on in the world of contemporary philosophy. While this book is ostensibly about the philosopher Peter Sloterdijk's take on the ideas of Heidegger, in taking on Heidegger's ideas, Sloterdijk brings up a lot of the issues of contemporary philosophy. One particular article called "The Human Park" brings up the question of how the ideals of humanism can be transferred to a population that reads less and less. This question is not fully answered by either Heidegger or Sloterdijk but it is the question itself that is interesting as this question brings up the question of whether there need be a common intellectual ground and moreover, if there is to be one, how can it be reestablished in a world of video games and television and other mediums perhaps not as well suited as books for transferal of ideas. I found that these articles take a long time to read as they are full of ideas and you will want to think about each one. While I feel I have gotten a better sense of what Heidegger thought, it the invitation to think about ideas like the one above that make this book interesting to read.

A thought provoking series of essays and talks about the state of philosophy and human society/humanity. This covers some of the same ideas found in Civilization and Its Discontents. One can look at the current state of the world politic as the narcissism of small differences globalized by social media platforms.

How do we come to terms with the reality of atheism and that we create out own purpose or become the actors for someone else's? If we realize the the forces of natural selection and the market do not promote the best, but the most fecund and resilient, we may be able to get ourselves out of these violent cycles.

The writing is not as accessible as it could be for a general reader, but is thought provoking.
