Emerald Buddha rocks

Emerald Buddha is a great continuation of Drake Ramsey's adventures. Not only are Allie and Spencer back, there are two new quirky characters that had me laughing non-stop. My favorite was Uncle Pete. He was just the right amount of wrong.

I've read and enjoyed all of Russell Blake's books. Each series has its own feel, so I know what to expect when I buy the next one. With Drake Ramsey, I know I'm gonna have fun.

A Jewel

A great follow up to Ramsey's Gold. The plot is fast paced with twists and turns, the action is fast and furious, writing is very descriptive, the characters are likeable and well developed and a nice touch of humor thrown in as well. The new characters are colorful and add a lot to the story. I hope to see more of Joe in future books, as he added a nice balance to Ramsey, Allie and Spencer. Looking forward to the next one in this series.

The second book in the Drake Ramsey series finds Drake, Allie, and Spencer once again searching for hidden treasure, this time in the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia. An ancient Khymer hoard of gold, jewels, and a magnificent jade statue, lost for centuries, is their goal. But they also are drafted by the CIA to hunt for a downed plane whose passenger was a senator's daughter and her boyfriend, a Chinese hacker who had penetrated the DOD computer system. The Chinese are also looking for them, wanting the information for themselves. Throw in the myriad drug runners, hostile foreign armies, and an expatriate American living in the jungle with a tribe of farmers, and you have another exciting page-turner from Russel Blake. Highly recommended!

Review from someone who is bad at math:

I have never been a strong math student; I have always had trouble making sense of numbers and received a D in my spring 2015 stats course.
I have always used my textbook for math classes to copy down the problem and attempt to make the answer match the one in the back, praying that the homework only consisted of odd numbered problems because they were the only answers provided. Straightforward Statistics is written unlike any math textbook I have ever used.
This textbook allowed me to conceptualize the statistical concepts we learned by providing relevant example problems and very clearly breaking down the different procedures introduced in each chapter.
Each chapter thoroughly covers a concept or statistical test in a way that breaks down to WHY you would use it as well as how to do so. The beginning of each chapter clearly states what the reader is expected to gain from it. Throughout the chapter are “pop quizzes” and awesome note bubbles that point out: things to focus on, the author’s insights on a certain procedure, and hints on how to look at problems differently. The end of the chapter provides: a concise recap of the method learned (written in a way that someone with ZERO stats experience could totally grasp), a list of key terms and definitions and a learning assessment with a variety of problems to test your understanding.
I have never before had any reason to enjoy reading a math book, nor have I ever felt the need to write a review of one. This book reads like a narrative, not an endless list of equations to memorize. After using this textbook in my inferential statistics course I was shocked to discover that I not only understood the material, but I absolutely loved learning about it. I finished my fall 2015 semester with a solid B in statistics (and it COULD have been an A if I had managed my time properly on our first exam!).
I am currently in my final semester of my undergraduate degree. My major is psychology. My initial graduate and professional plans/goals focused mainly on studying behavior and learning and expanding upon different psychological theories. After learning to view statistics with the same enthusiasm and love as the author so obviously does, I was forced to allow myself to consider a previously unattainable education route that focuses intensely on analyzing data. Fields such as quantitative psychology and applied behavioral statistics are now in my radar.
I always assumed that only those with a genius IQ ever actually enjoyed playing with math, though now I find myself (previously considered BAD at math....) super excited to apply the statistical tests that I learned in this book to various data that I encounter. I am now able to take a seemingly random group of numbers and be confident in my ability to make them mean something; AND completely understand what my results mean and why a specific test is used.
I never expected keep a math textbook on my desk and refer to it regularly, sometimes just for fun, to see what the numbers "look like"! I have also never wanted to write over 500 words on how AWESOME I think my math text is. This book allowed me to develop a confidence that I thought was lost in my previous battle with numbers.
I am still baffled by how excited I am about statistics. Straightforward Statistics is truly the best textbook I have used for any type of course. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to any and all that are dreading taking a stats course. This book allowed me to broaden my educational interests and for that I am thankful.

I selected this book for my students because I liked the explanations and felt it covered more than traditional textbooks (for example, it teaches t-tests for when equal variances are not assumed). I was disappointed in the ANOVA chapter because it does not describe repeated measures or two-factor ANOVA. I already had materials and slides for this and felt this flaw was not enough to select another book. Given how reasonably priced this textbook is, I feel comfortable knowing I am not placing an excessive financial burden on my students. All around, a solid textbook. The two primary criticisms I have are: The ANOVA chapter feels incomplete, and much to my surprise, the student edition has all the answers in the back (not just odd questions). This makes the book less practical for assigning homework from but better for students who wish to get extra practice.

Not an on- the- fly field guide

It's not actually a field guide. It's more of an explanation of the ecosystems. If you're looking for a book that you can use on the fly to identify plants, animals, trees,etc, this is not it. If you want to study the ecosystems, perhaps this is the book.

a must for statisticians wanting to learn R

This book along with Jim Albert's should be read by every statistician that does a lot of statistical computing. Both books help you learn R quickly and apply it to many important problems in research both applied and theoretical. Albert emphasizes applications in Bayesian statistics whereas Spector is teaching how to do data manipulation, things like merging and transposing data sets. These techniques can be easy to do in a language like SAS after a little training but in other programming languages it can be very difficult.

Great little book

This concise 150 page book contains a wealth of information, writen clearly and with many well-chosen examples. I liked it a lot. It covers reading and writing data in/out of the R workspace, including access to databases. The names of other chapters suggest the topics covered: "Dates", "Factors", "Subscripting", "Character manipulation", "Data aggregation", "Reshaping data".

This book will be helpful to any but the most absolutely new to R, and even the seasoned user will find interesting hints and examples. I cannot recommend it enough.

One minor qualm I have is the absence of references. Some topics (for instance, regular expressions) are fairly complex, and well documented elsewhere: a pointer or two would be helpful. Same with, for instance, SQL, which is mentioned and demonstrated briefly.

Another not-so-minor qualm is price. A book of this size from, for instance, Dover classics collection, with similar paper quality and covers, is about a third or fourth of the price. Although this is a new book I find the $54.95 tag (Amazon discounted price is about $44.50) fairly high. But this has nothing to do with the quality of the book, rather it has to do with the Springer pricing policies.

All in all, if you don't mind the price, this is a good buy.

All too often novices wanting to use R for an analysis never get to the analysis because they can't successfully import, clean-up and restructure their data for the analysis functions. This book prevents those problems by telling you the critical data and file manipulation materials that are usually briefly (and inadequately) covered in stat books. It is a short easy read that will give you the tools to get your data ready to go.

You can see the table of contents and read the other reviews but areas that really shine include: dealing with categorical (named or ordered) factor variables, recoding numeric data into categorical variables, and also making and working with summary tables.

When it comes to data manipulation and clean-up Spector has the best coverage of any book or web FAQ. This book is very expensive for its size but it is worth every cent.

I want us all to have the ability to see it and talk about it, and stop passing it down to one generation after another. About the Author

Jonice Webb has a PhD in clinical psychology, and has been licensed to practice since 1991. She has a strong background in research, psychological testing and psychotherapy.  Webb has been the Director of three large outpatient clinics over the course of her career. She currently has a private psychotherapy practice in Lexington, MA, where she specializes in the treatment of couples and adolescents. Webb currently resides in the Boston area with her husband and two children.

it was like the author knew my family

I read this book 4 days ago and already its completely changed my life. I have been trying to figure out for decades now why, despite success in many areas of my life and seemingly solid family of origin, I have always had anxiety and trouble with relationships and connecting with other people. My kids seem to be inheriting this, and since my older child was diagnosed with depression and anxiety a few years ago, I've always had this suspicion that its at least partly my fault, or that something I was doing was causing this. I've had trouble connecting with my kids and being that loving family everyone else seems to have, but for the life of me i couldn't figure out how to fix it. I read tons of parenting books, all would help a bit, but none really got to the root of the issue. Finally I googled "am I causing child's anxiety" and it led me to an article referencing this book. I downloaded the book and immediately recognized myself and my family of origin in this book...wow. It was intense. But spot on. Page after page after page, it was like the author knew my family, watched my childhood, and now was predicting how I was repeating this pattern with my own kids. I wasn't giving my kids the emotional support they desperately needed because i had not received it myself and had no idea what I didn't know. But all is not lost, as the author provides guidance on fixing this. And it all makes so much sense. I read the book in one night and started implementing the tools right away, and the results were immediate and drastic. My tween daughter and I had a lengthy conversation about what's been going on in her life, and just by doing what the author suggests - identify, accept, attribute, act - she poured her heart out to me for 2 straight hours, at least twice saying "I've never told anybody this..." Wow. Just wow. The next day, I continued to do this. I thought it would be difficult, but its not, its easy, and very quickly started to come naturally. My younger child also started talking more openly to me. We're having great dinner conversation. The kids haven't been fighting, and when they do instead of yelling or getting mad at them for bickering, I'm approaching it from the perspective of IAAA, and the fights have fizzled immediately on their own! Its like magic. I am so thankful to the author. My only regret was not having read this 20 years ago!!!

I recommend it solely for identification purposes and not healing purposes.

I had this book at my house for quite a while but never read it. I think by the time it arrived in the mail I had forgotten why I ordered it in the first place. Anyway, I was doing a google search and the book came up and I remembered that I already had the book at the house. I read the first 100 pages in a day. The author gave you the characteristics of parents that may result in emotionally neglected children:

1. Narcissistic parent
2. Authoritarian parent
3. Permissive parent
4. Bereaved parent: Divorced or widowed
5. Addicted parent (not just to drugs or alcohol)
6. Depressed parent
7. Workaholic parent
8. Parent with a special needs family member
9. Achievement or perfection focused parent
10. Sociopathic parent
11. Child as parent
12. The Well-Meaning Parent

The quote that stood out to me is this: "Emptiness seems like nothing to most peop. And nothing is nothing, neither good or bad. But in the case of a human beings' internal functioning, nothing is definitely something. Emptiness is actually a feeling in and of itself."

The author gave you descriptions of the parent and gave you examples of clients. I was so engrossed by the connection I was feeling to what I felt my issue was and was ecstatic to find this book. In fact, I plan to keep it for my continued journey using various methods of healing.

Sadly, the methods given by the author were things I have already done that didn't work. The characteristics of someone running on empty that are not easily dismissed are shame at being different and emptiness that will not go away.

The exercises and suggestions in the book, like self soothers and writing exercises and so forth, only mask the underlying issue. I don't think the book is helpful for resolving the empty or shame or flawed feeling but the book is great for identifying your issues and your parent issues. I recommend it solely for identification purposes and not healing purposes.

Finally a term for this beast that's been haunting me my whole life

It took me years to finally meet with a therapist. My life was great--right? Plenty of friends, great career...so why this dark, heavy feeling I always carried around? What WAS it? Well my therapist encouraged me to pick up Running on Empty and I finally have the answer.

The book's author, Dr. Jonice Webb, describes and coins the term, "emotional neglect" with such detail and accuracy it's almost scary. Who knew how common this is and that others feel this way too?? I literally laughed and cried throughout the book.

And just when I started to think, "oh goodness, am I repeating this pattern with my own children?" Dr. Webb writes, "The effects of Emotional Neglect can be reversed.  And you're about to learn how to reverse those parental patterns for yourself, and for your children.  Keep reading. No self-blame allowed.".  (How did she KNOW that's where I was going??).

As you can see, I highly recommend this book. The topic resonated with me and the writing style was flowing, kind and easy to understand. Thank you!

St Kilda breaks the waters of the Atlantic Ocean some 100 miles west of the mainland, and 40 miles west of the Outer Hebridean island of North Uist. About the Author
Angela Gannon, an RCAHMS archaeologist, led the major field survey project on St Kilda in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland, and is an expert on Scotland's island landscapes. George Geddes was the National Trust for Scotland's St Kilda archaeologist 2008-9, living on the islands for six months. Now an archaeologist at RCAHMS, he specialises in thestudy of Scotland's remote islands.

The book has wonderful insight to St. Kilda, which I plan on visiting on my vacation. The pictures and maps are awesome. Love the book and it arrived early and in better than expected condition. Would use this vendor again.
