What Happened?

In 1998, Microsoft held a Professional Developer's Conference (PDC) in San Diego. COM luminary Charlie Kindel stood up in a general session and proclaimed "no more GUIDs—no more HRESULTs—no more IUnknown." He and Mary Kirtland proceeded to show the basic architecture of the CLR, then known as the COM+ Runtime. Later in the session, Nat Brown and David Stutz stood up and demonstrated cross-language inheritance using Visual Basic and Java. Attendees actually went home with CDs containing primitive versions of compilers that could reproduce this very odd demonstration. It is now February 2002, and this technology has finally shipped in release form.

There are two days that will forever demarcate the evolution of the Microsoft platform. On July 27, 1993, Windows NT 3.1 was released, marking the end of the DOS era. On February 13, 2002, the Common Language Runtime (CLR) was released as part of the .NET Framework, marking the end of the COM era.

The .NET Framework is a platform for software integration. Fundamentally, the .NET Framework provides two core integration technologies. The Common Language Runtime (CLR) is used to integrate software within a single operating system process. XML Web Services are used to integrate software at Internet scale. Both rely on similar ideas, that is, strongly typed contracts and encapsulation. Fundamentally, though, they are two distinct technologies that one can elect to adopt independently of one another. It is completely reasonable to adopt XMLWeb Services prior to the CLR (in fact, many production Web services have already done this). It is also reasonable to adopt the CLR in the absence of XMLWeb Services in order to access CLR-specific features such as code access security or superior memory management facilities. Going forward, however, both the CLR and XML Web Services will be central to the Microsoft development platform, and it is only a matter of time before both of these technologies play a role in everyone's development experience.

The CLR and XML Web Services are both focused on strongly typed contracts between components. Both technologies require developers to describe component interactions in terms of type definitions or contracts. In both technologies, these contracts share two key ideas that tend to permeate their use: metadata and virtualization.

Both the CLR and XMLWeb Services rely on high-fidelity, ubiquitous, and extensible metadata to convey programmer intention. Metadata conveys the basic structure and type relationships to the developers who will consume a CLR component or XMLWeb Service.

Equally important, ubiquitous metadata informs the tools and underlying platform of what the component developers had in mind when they were authoring the code.

This metadata-directed "clairvoyance" allows the platform to provide richer support than would be possible if the component were completely opaque. For example, various aspects of object-to-XML mapping are captured in metadata for use by the CLR's XML serializer. How the developer intended the XML to look is conveyed through declarative metadata extensions rather than through explicit labor-intensive coding.

The second key idea that permeates CLR and XML Web Service contracts is the notion of virtualization. Both technologies emphasize the separation of semantic intentions from physical implementation details. Specifically, the metadata for both technologies work at an abstract structural level rather than in terms of low-level data representations and implementation techniques. When developers specify intercomponent contracts at this "virtual" level, the underlying platform is free to express the contracts in the most appropriate manner available. For example, by expressing Web Service contracts in terms of an abstract data model, the plumbing is free to use an efficient binary data representation for performance or to use the text-based XML 1.0 representation for maximum interoperability.

Because contracts are virtualized, this specific detail of the contract can be bound at runtime based on post-development characteristics.

Because this volume focuses exclusively on the CLR, a working definition of the CLR is in order. The CLR is fundamentally a loader that brings your components to life inside an operating system process. The CLR replaces COM's CoCreateInstance and Win32's LoadLibrary as the primary loader for code.

The CLR loader provides a number of services beyond what COM and Win32 offered before it. The CLR loader is version-aware and provides flexible configuration of version policies and code repositories. The CLR loader is security-aware and is a critical part of the enforcement of security policy. The CLR loader is type-aware and provides a rich runtime environment for the explicit management and creation of types independent of programming language. In short, the CLR loader is an advanced component technology that supplants COM as Microsoft's primary in-memory integration strategy.

The CLR is made accessible through compilers that emit the CLR's new file format. Program language wonks view the CLR as providing key building blocks for compiler writers, building blocks that reduce the complexity of compiler implementations. In contrast, systems wonks often view programming languages as facades or "skins" over the underlying constructs of the CLR. The author falls firmly into the latter camp. However, programming languages are a necessary lens through which even low-level systems plumbers view the CLR. To that end, examples in this book are written in various programming languages because binary dumps of metadata and code are arcane to the point of being incomprehensible.

About This Book

I try very hard to make a book readable and accessible to a wide array of readers, but invariably, my terse writing style tends to make a "Don Box book" a challenge to get through. Experience has shown me that I am horrible at writing tutorials or primers. What I can do reasonably well is convey how I see the world in book form. To that end, it is not uncommon to need to read a Don Box book more than once to get the intended benefits.

As the previous paragraph implied, this book is by no means a tutorial. If you try to learn .NET Framework programming from a standing start using this book, the results may not be pretty. For readers looking for a good tutorial on .NET programming techniques or the C# language, please read Stan Lippman's C# Primer (Addison-Wesley, 2002) or Jeffery Richter's Applied .NET Framework Programming (Microsoft Press, 2002) before taking on this book.

This book is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 focuses on the Common Language Runtime. Volume 2 will focus ST3on XMLWeb Services. Although the two technologies share a fair number of core concepts, the thought of covering them both in a single book made my head spin.

This book was written against Version 1 of the CLR. Some of the internal techniques used by the CLR may evolve over time and may in fact change radically. In particular, the details of virtual method dispatch are very subject to change. They are included in this book largely as an homage to COM developers wondering where the vptr went. That stated, the basic concepts that are the focus of this book are likely to remain stable for years to come.

Throughout the book, I use assertions in code to reinforce the expected state of a program. In the CLR, assertions are performed using System. Diagnostics.Debug.Assert, which accepts a Boolean expression as its argument. If the expression evaluates to false, then the assertion has failed and the program will halt with a distinguished error message. For readability, all code in this book uses the short form, Debug.Assert, which assumes that the System.Diagnostics namespace prefix has been imported.

My perspective on .NET is fairly agnostic with respect to language. In my daily life, I use C# for about 50 percent of my CLR-based programming. I use C++ for about 40 percent, and I resort to ILASM for the remaining 10 percent. That stated, most programming examples in this book use C# if for no other reason than it is often the most concise syntax for representing a particular concept or technique. Although some chapters may seem language-focused, none of them really is. The vast majority of this book could have used C++, but, given the tremendous popularity of C#, I elected to use C# to make this book as accessible as possible.

This book focuses on the Common Language Runtime and is divided into 10 chapters:

  • Chapter 1—The CLR as a Better COM: This chapter frames the discussion of the CLR as a replacement for the Component Object Model (COM) by looking at the issues that faced COM developers and explaining how the CLR addresses those issues through virtualization and ubiquitous, extensible metadata.
  • Sum Chapter 2—Components: Ultimately, the CLR is a replacement for the OS and COM loaders. This chapter looks at how code is packaged and how code is loaded, both of which are done significantly differently than in the Win32 and COM worlds.
  • Chapter 3—Type Basics: Components are containers for the code and metadata that make up type definitions. This chapter focuses on the CLR's common type system (CTS), including what constitutes a type and how types relate. This is the first chapter that contains significant chunks of source code.
  • Chapter 4—Programming with Type: The CLR makes type a first-class concept in the programming model. This chapter is dedicated to the explicit use of type in CLR programs, with an emphasis on the role of metadata and runtime type information.
  • Chapter 5—Instances: The CLR programming model is based on types, objects, and values. Chapter 4 focused on type; this chapter focuses on objects and values. Specifically, this chapter outlines the difference between these two instancing models, including how values and objects differ with respect to memory management.
  • Chapter 6—Methods: All component interaction occurs through method invocation. The CLR provides a broad spectrum of techniques for making method invocation an explicit act. This chapter looks at those techniques, starting with method initialization through JIT compilation and ending with method termination via strongly typed exceptions.
  • Chapter 7—Advanced Methods: The CLR provides a rich architecture for intercepting method calls. This chapter dissects the CLR's interception facilities and its support for aspect-oriented programming. These facilities are one of the more innovative aspects of the CLR.
  • Chapter 8—Domains: The CLR uses AppDomains rather than OS processes to scope the execution of code. To that end, this chapter looks at the role of AppDomains both as a replacement for the underlying OS's process model as well as an AppDomain's interactions between the assembly resolver or loader. Readers with Java roots will find the closest analog to a Java class loader here.
  • Chapter 9—Security: One of the primary benefits of the CLR is that it provides a secure execution environment. This chapter looks at how the CLR loader supports the granting of privileges to code and how those privileges are enforced.
  • Chapter 10—CLR Externals: The first nine chapters of this book are focused on what it means to write programs to the CLR's programming model. This concluding chapter looks at how one steps outside of that programming model to deal with the world outside of the CLR.

Hardcore .NET
By Bradley J. Wilson
Don't let the first few chapters of this book fool you: this is a book for hardcore .NET developers. It shouldn't be the first book you buy about .NET, as it goes into incredible detail about the fundamentals of the .NET platform. For example, when you learn about using types on the platform, it's not just a pragmatic approach to writing code: it shows underneath how the system does what it does. This gives you a fuller view of the system, and lets some of the mystery disappear. The knowledge makes you a better "big picture" developer.
Don thinks at a high level, and writes very concisely as a result. By any other author, this book might've been a 1400 page mammoth; I'm amazed at the valuable data he's packed into just over 400 pages.
Some developers may the material in this book unattainable because of the concise and in-depth technical material. Those who do grok it will find it invaluable. This book was well worth the wait for me.

A dry subject made interesting
By William G. Ryan
There are like a zillion CLR books out there and overall, it's not the type of subject that normally keeps you glued to it. When I got Jeffrey Richther's Microsoft .NET Framework book, I was convinced no one was going to outdo him. Well, it's a close call, but I think they are both Superb books by excellent authors. I've purchased Don's stuff before and really liked it. This book lived up to its expectations.
I think his ability to communicate some of the more obscure areas of the CLR in a very clear matter is what makes this book shine. This book can be understood by anyone because of the writer's gift for writing...but that's not to say it's a novice's book. Wherever you are in the .NET learning curve, there's something for you in this book.
If you really want to learn the CLR, this is a great place to start.

Uncovers the little quirks and secrets of the CLR
By Southern California .NET User Group
This book is worth reading if you keep in mind that its main purpose is to uncover the little quirks and secrets of the CLR. As the author states, it isn't intended to be a tutorial and shouldn't be your first choice if you are new to .NET programming (I'd recommend the excellent Applied .NET Framework Programming by Jeffrey Richter as a good starter book). However, reading Essential .NET could potentially save you lots of time sifting through the MSDN documentation to find out why your program is not behaving exactly the way you think it should (you know, those little, tiny, nasty bugs that prove to be the hardest to find).
As with any book that tries to cover such an extensive ground as the .NET CLR is, there are tradeoffs in the depth and extent with which the author describes each subject. In this case, Box chose to highlight the details of the inner workings of the CLR that we, as programmers, must have present to make efficient and appropriate use of the runtime facilities. Chapters one through five deal with basic concepts that, in my opinion, are best left to an introductory book and are not worth more than skimming through them, although you could always find a golden needle hidden in the haystack. However, on chapters six and after, the book really takes off and you'll probably find new things to learn page after page.
Although the crucial details are clearly exposed, this book is by no means exhaustive, I believe it can be considered more as a base from where you can start researching further about the subject of your interest. For example chapter seven, "Advanced Methods", deals with stack/message transitions, proxies, sinks and contexts. All these concepts are very well covered but I didn't get the eureka! feeling until I read Ingo Rammer's Advanced .NET Remoting and could see those concepts in action and realize their importance.
All in all, a book that deserves a slot in your .NET library (a slot somewhere in between a pair of good tutorials and the in-detail books about the areas of the framework that draw your interest). I would consider it a good investment of your time and money and I also see myself coming back to it (specially back to chapter 6-10) as a refresher. -- Review by Julio G.

Don't waste your money.
By editorial goddess
This review book was assigned to my senior ultrasound program in our last quarter of classes. A colleague of mine who is a radiologic technologist had used the A&L RT review book and found it helpful, so my expectations when it was assigned were to be able to learn and to have a good array of review questions.

However, this book seems to be a compendium of outdated information rife with typos that would be hilarious if they were not so frequent. I am finding that working through it is about a 75% waste of time. Who edited this?.... Anyone?...... Anyone?

Another problem is that images are labeled wrong, or not labeled (e.g.: "Name the structure with the arrow on example 5-113," and then there is no arrow. Or worse, the arrow clearly, unmistakably points to the aorta and the answer is IVC.).

The OB/GYN chapters are better than the physics and abdomen chapters; the latter have significant errors in them. My biggest problem is that as a whole these questions require very little critical thinking and are not "pitched" at a level commensurate with what I believe the ARDMS registries require (I will update this review after taking my registries in Mar.-April).

And now, for amusement value, some of the misprints:

"posterior urethral values"

for intussusception, "intersuppection"

"pleura effusion" --- and the list goes on.

For review I would recommend the following books:

Physics:

Physical Principles of General and Vascular Ultrasonography, Jim Baun, BA, RVT, RDMS [...]

Understanding Ultrasound Physics, Sidney Edelman, 2nd Edition

Abdomen:

Exam Preparation for Diagnostic Ultrasound, Sanderson/Dolk/Miner

Abdomen & OB/GYN:

Clinical Guide to Ultrasound, Charlotte Hennigsen.

One of the best Mexican/Southwest cook books out there
By EatWisconsin
I ate at Elote last February and was blown away with my meal so when we returned home I ordered this book directly from the restaurant. Everything I have made has been outstanding. The Elote is always a hit as a great appetizer and the carnitas, with their strange ingredient list including Coca-Cola, Orange Juice, and Milk) are some of the best I have ever had. If you are stuck in the usual rut of cooking Tacos, Burritos, and Enchaladas, this book will get you out of it.

Well thought out and delicious cookbook
By Larisa C.
I stumbled upon Elote Cafe while on a trip to the Grand Canyon in Sedona. Despite the icy, snowy weather and unsafe driving conditions while there, the little place was packed - and rightly so. This chef puts a lot of thought and care into his recipes and the quality of his food. I'm Mexican-American from California, and I know what an authentic, good dish of Mexican food is, and I'm highly pleased that Jeff Smedstad got it right. His cookbook represents this, and is full of colorful pictures, detailed and practical instructions, and each recipe has a personal anecdote from him or explains the history of the dish. Overall, this cookbook is very personal, you notice the effort he put into it, and how much he selflessly gave of himself and his restaurant in this book since every recipe from his restaurant is here. He's definitely an authority on Mexican cuisine, having spent so much time there, and the book encompasses dishes from various regions of Mexico - of course he's put his own touch to them. I highly recommended this cookbook!

Save time, grab this book and save your startup.
By Andy Dent
I suggest when Charlyn ends the free promotion period she seriously re-thinks the $2.99 price on this book. It deserves more respect than that.

I was impressed by the cleverness of her Appreneur Summit and watched quite a few of the videos when it was being held.

My background includes decades of software development, including shipping products used by tens of thousands of users.

I've also spent a couple of years of studying the startup scene, working on my own startup and going through the Founder Institute in 2014.

I still picked up some valuable points from the summit videos and I'm really happy to see those videos summarised in book form because it's a lot more usable and better written than my own notes. Even better, treat the book as a guide to the videos so you can optimise your viewing time - go buy them after you read the book!

I have hope! (for weight loss and wellness!)
By LLL
First, I bought the book because I was briefly a patient of Kulreet Chaudhary's when she was in private practice (she was referred to me as on e of the top neurologists in San Diego at the time). Knowing who she is, I was idly curious about the book, but I don't usually enjoy non-fiction reading. So I started it last night thinking "I'll just skim a bit and see if anything jumps out at me." It was so compelling I could not put it down. My husband pried my kindle from my tense tired hands about 1:45 AM. (My only complaint so far is that, contrary to its own advice, this book kept me up WAY past my bedtime!!!)

I am about 75% through and will edit my review if my opinion changes after following the Prime, but I am so excited about this book that I wanted to do a review right away. Also, as a former patient of the author's I have already followed a few things she recommends in the book and they did indeed work.

What's so great about “The Prime?”:

1. It’s a really good, entertaining, fascinating read!
It’s extremely informative but written in such a way that I just want to keep reading - what will I learn next?!

2. It’s substantive.
The book is full of REAL information that "explains so much" about why we (humans) do the things we do with food and health, and why our bodies react the way they do. It never talks down to you, but it is readable, interesting, easy to grasp despite the amazing wealth of information it contains.

Maybe I'm just a geek but I find this book SO fascinating because it explains, so clearly, how brain wiring, body chemistry, nervous system, and digestion interact to compel us to eat, drink, live, even FEEL the way we do. I must have said "OMG so THAT'S why that happens/how that works" 20 times last night. I even understand addictions like alcoholism and drugs better, plus depression. If you've tried some other diets that are supposed to be super healthy and seem to work for many but they did not work for you (like Paleo, gluten free, sugar free, vegan, low carb, whatever...) this book explains why they may work for some but not others and what you need do first to “prime” yourself.

3. It’s convincing.
It gives sound, resourced explanations for all the information it contains. I *so* appreciate being given the facts/science that back up an author’s concepts and advice.

I *try* to be open minded regarding self healing with lifestyle, diet, exercise, but I get discouraged when so many self-appointed experts these days proclaim things like "Artificial sweetener is poison!" or "Gluten is bad" or "Taking a supplement is not as beneficial as eating actual food" -- but never (convincingly )explain *why* that is. Do they really *know* or did they just hear someone else say it and choose to repeat it? And when different “experts” recommend contradictory things who am I to believe?

But here, I have no doubt the author knows what she’s talking about (why the body reacts the way it does and how it all ties together) because she’s a neuroscientist, a practicing doctor, and she explains it and supports it.

4. It's not just for losing weight.
The big sell for this book is that if you follow the prime you will lose weight! The delightful surprise in it is that you will also become optimally healthy and feel better than ever. If you or a loved one have ANY kind of chronic ailment - autoimmune, diabetes, ulcers, headaches, etc. I strongly recommend this book.

5. You don’t have to give anything up! It's a "weight loss" book but, she doesn't take anything away! The Prime gives you some new, simple things to start doing that will help your overall functioning, naturally resulting in weight loss. I can do that, I can ADD a few simple habits to my diet/routine as long as you stay the bleep away from my favorite treats!

The book claims that with the new habits you add, your desires will naturally gravitate toward what is more healthy for you over time. TRUTH! This is 100% true in my experience because when I was Dr. Chaudhary's patient some things she “prescribed” to me are part of “The Prime” and that is *exactly* what happened for me. a.) I started actually craving healthy things that I had no interest in before and b) (most) junk food simply became less appealing to me. It was natural and comfortable. I just shifted a little...

Whereas if someone said "xxxx is bad for you, don't eat it." my reaction is to become belligerently resistant. Not only do I not want to be deprived, sometimes I actually feel my culture and beliefs--America itself!--are being insulted when someone tells me I should not eat something I grew up on and have been feeding my family, that I love and maybe associate with special gatherings, holidays and events. There is none of that "this is always right that is always wrong" lecturing in this book.

I'm so enthused about this book I want to send a copy to every single person I know with even the slightest weight or health issues. But that would probably irritate many of them, so for now I'm writing this review and hopefully many people will see it and get the book!

I am going to start implementing the parts of the Prime that I was not already doing very soon. In a couple months, if there is no improvement, I will edit my review accordingly. But I'm definitely sold based on my experience so far.

better skin, better commitment to eating well
By Valerie
I have been on The Prime for 6 months, and I am finishing up Stage 4. It has done so many things for my health: clearer head, better skin, better commitment to eating well, lower BP and less flabby bits which were creeping onto my menopausal body. The most amazing by far, however, is that my chronic, low level, hard to treat depression has lifted and has remained lifted for 4+ months. Even knowing all I know about the program, I still cannot believe it. I had become good at managing my condition, but now the condition is simply not there. As I started to dig more deeply into the emerging science re gut health, it all makes so much sense. For those who are not science geeks, Dr Chaudhary explains why The Prime works in just enough detail so that you understand the premise of the book, without needing a degree in A&P.

This is a plan for anyone who wants to really understand their body and make a commitment to a healthful lifestyle, but there is lots of room for moderation. For me that still means all of the foods I love once in a while, but my cravings for sugar, salt, and processed foods are gone. I get to make the choice if I want some fries or ice cream or a beer. This makes all the difference in the world to me. When you start to truly believe that food IS medicine, and our consistent choices affect our health, saying no becomes much easier.

Yes, it requires some commitment and changing of habits, but when you feel WELL, when you experience the world differently, none of them are too hard to manage, even for someone who hates to cook or struggles with keeping up with programs like The Prime. It sure beats sitting in the pharmacy line waiting for my BP medication!

I have turned friends onto The Prime, and they have gotten help with everything form weight loss to gall-bladder issues to arthritis pain.

Having been turned on to Ayurveda as an approach to balancing my life, is a whole other review. Best of luck to anyone who chooses this amazing adventure.

Easiest 7 pounds I've ever lost
By Pam Silleman
I was skeptical at first but I just hung in there and made my tea every morning simply drink 5 cups of it throughout the day and now 30 days later I've lost 7 pounds with zero effort whatsoever, I haven't changed anything else in my life style or diet except for adding this tea and that one little pill at night before I go to bed

WELL WRITTEN AND CONCISE BIOLOGY TEXT
By Robert Williams
BIOLOGY Concepts and Connections, by Campbell, Reece, Taylor, Simon and Dickey is a very well written college text book on the study of life on earth.

The book is well illustrated with hundreds of diagrams, charts and photos which make the text easier to understand.

All classes of biologic life are discussed in detail and I especially liked the chapters on Evolution and human Evolution which are sometimes glossed over in works by other authors.

The study of life on earth covers a vast range in subject matter, thus having a multitude of authors ensures expertise over a broader range of subjects.

This, the 6th edition 2009 is new enough for all but the most serious studies. It is vastly superior to the college biology texts that I used when in college in the 1950s. It can also be obtained for only a fraction of the cost of newer editions.

Wheather a student or anyone else interested in the nature of life on earth, this book will provide a wealth of knowledge and understanding.

Awesome purchase!
By Roxi
Great book! Bought it used from Amazon Warehouse Deals and was a little worried at what quality I would get since it said "Acceptable" condition. None the less, the book I received is brand new! It was actually still wrapped in foil when I got it. I looked through it and it seems no one has ever used it, the pages are blank and look unused. I already pretty much knew I wouldn't receive a MasteringBiology access code and was planning on buying one (no biggie), but as I was flipping through the book I found an unopened one! It was completely sealed and the code still covered up (you have to scratch the area in order to see your code). I haven't used it yet since I bought the book for the upcoming fall semester but I will sure do so once it starts. I couldn't be more happy with my decision to buy used. I received a brand new $200+ textbook (at my college bookstore) for under $70!
