Indeed it is said that my writings are poison to some, manna to others. Because in deeply ingrained, controversial issues, there is never one solid set of truth. When an outsider takes the role of an independent observer then writes claiming that their viewpoint is "unbiased" and "objective," both of the feuding parties will disagree with her.
I was raised in Turkey, and have witnessed that in general Turks are open-minded,and free of cradle to grave hatred towards those who betrayed them in the past. My novels are complex and off-the-beaten track, ranging from reincarnation to politically controversial issues. But I did not, consciously, concoct novels to fit a certain view. Rather, these themes showed up as an inherent part of my fictional characters' lives. For example, one of my three protagonists in THE HORSEMAN, is a Kurd, Mehmet Ali Mesut, Professor of Sociology, who is an idealist, an enlightened man, his chief concern the betterment of his people! by bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, yet he comes from a line of aghas, feudal lords. So naturally feudalism in Turkey, its history and effect on the emotional and social sovereignty of the people, enters the story line.

Kristina has an eye opener with "The Horseman"

"A gripping epic of passion, politics, spirituality and more." That is what the back cover promises. And this is precisely what this magnificent book delivered. From its mysterious beginning, it traces the journey of a young girl leaping toward womanhood, at a dizzy pace that is at times in it self, breath-taking. Set in Turkey in the turbulent 60's, I was immediately immersed in a kaleidoscope of rich culture and intrigue, that slowly started to burn inside me as if I were there as witness, until at last I was nearly consumed. The rich pageantry and insight of a little understood culture comes to life between the pages of The Horseman, taking you on a break-neck journey of romance, passion and self discovery, as well as the realization of past life experience. Fragile alliances, mysterious dreams of the past, action and adventure intertwine into an excellent tale both realistic in its scope, but powerful in impact. As the story travels full circle to the twist in the end, the hint of a greater twist to come inspired me to grab the next book of the series, "The Scorpion Child," And ride off into the sunset......

'The Horseman' is a gripping novel that will sweep you in to its characters' lives before you realize you've been caught. Highly descriptive in its imagery, the tale guides the reader through worlds both ancient and contemporary with compelling characters, intriguing story line, and cultural/political clashes too richly detailed to resist. Magnificently illuminative of the ongoing conflicts between Turks and Kurds, 'The Horseman' is as much a pleasurable geographical/historical journey through ancient lands as it is a tale of the strengths and weaknesses within the human condition. Romance, political intrigues, cultural bridges, betrayals, faith ... it is timely and very much alive. O'Donnelly reveals a great depth of knowledge on many levels including the traditions & mores within the Muslim world, the Irish Catholic experience, and even Celtic mythology. Highly recommended to any reader who craves a good tale enriched by trans-continental adventures, historical insights and skillfully applied literary gifts of the author.

Sexy and exciting romantic thriller--and launch to powerful series

Ariadne, a blond American teen living with her parents in Turkey, suffers a prophetic vision while on her way to an archeological dig. Sometimes the vision is of an ancient past, and sometimes of a cruel future. In every case, though, she is caught in a love triangle.

When she's rescued from a kidnapping by a handsome Kurdish nobleman, Ariadne believes she may have found her great love--and certainly Mehmet Ali falls for the beautiful and energetic teenager. Although she does love Mehmet Ali, though, Ariadne is obsessed with the crusading journalist Burhan Kayhanoly--who falls for her the moments she walks into his office to interview for an internship at the newspaper where he writes a regular column.

Burhan exposes Ariadne to the poverty and ignorance that, he believes, are holding his beloved nation down. Ariadne is especially sympathetic with the poor conditions for women--a sympathy made much stronger when Mehmet Ali's sister weds a much older man--and then commits suicide. She dreams of a life with Burhan, together stomping out the corruption that is such a blight on Turkish society and politics.

Award-winning author Kristina O'Donnelly mixes past-life regression, tarot, and traditional Turkish magic with sensual passion and with adventure as Mehmet Ali, Ariadne, and Burhan sometimes cooperate and sometimes battle over the path to be taken by their nation (or even whether there should be a nation of Turkey rather than an independent Kurdistan). O'Donnelly blends in the past-lives over which these three have carried out their eternal triangle of love and dispair.

SUZANNE BELL is a forensic chemist at West Virginia University. She has published widely in academic journals including the Journal of Forensic Science, Journal of Analytical Toxicology, and Analytical Chemistry. This is a great overview of the history of forensic science. In a concise, yet very readable format, it discusses key historical developments in Forensics. The book would have benefited greatly from diagrams, photographs and chars. All in all, very recommended.

Yves L. Doz is the Solvay Chaired Professor of Technological Innovation at INSEAD. He is the coauthor, with Jose Santos and Peter Williamson, of From Global to Metanational: How Companies Win in the Knowledge Economy. Keeley Wilson is a senior research fellow at INSEAD.

Managing Global Innovation - how to build an innovation network that really works.

I thoroughly recommend `Managing Global Innovation' to anyone who has an interest in what continuing globalisation means for how firms need to organise and structure themselves to remain competitive. Taking this huge, complex subject, the authors have produced a well thought-out, strongly argued and informative response that is the product of field research carried out over a long period of time.

The pacy style of writing (refreshingly jargon-free) holds the reader's interest as you are guided through a penetrating analysis of each of the challenges to globally integrated innovation, and then given the solutions needed to overcome them. The two appendices provide helpful context into the drivers of knowledge dispersion and how the nature of innovation has changed since the mid 1970s.

For me a brilliantly used feature of the book, and one that greatly enhances the force of the narrative, is the way examples from the well known companies they worked with are inserted to illustrate the authors' conclusions. Planted in the text of every chapter in stand out boxes, these examples draw the complex threads of the argument together and form a pertinent and striking illustration of the actions necessary to bring about a desired result. And unlike so many business books, the examples do not only illustrate how a particular tactic is a necesssary step towards building an organisation that encourages innovation, but also the where, why and how it could fail to do so.

Many managers reading this book will immediately recognise challenges their own organisations have faced but usually failed to resolve, despite the deployment of considerable human and financial resources. However, after absorbing the book's messages, and armed with the clear road map provided by the authors, they should feel confident of being able to make the strategic choices that could finally put them on the road to successful global innovation.

I foresee this well researched and beautifully written book becoming a highly influential and thought provoking contribution to an increasingly critical problem for so many organisations; one that has long been recognised,and on which much ink has been spilled without producing any widely applicable solutions. Firmly rooted in real life business cases, this book may finally put the argument to rest by offering global companies strategies that actually work.

How to conceive, build, and hone a global innovation capability "that is enduring, practical, and rooted in realities"

The title of this review is taken from a brilliant Foreword in which Cesare Mainardi suggests that this book explains "how to conceive, build, and hone a global innovation capability that is enduring, practical, and rooted in the realities of both global competition and a company's particular approach to its market." In my opinion, this is a "must read" for leaders of companies that have that strategic objective but also for leaders of other companies that are part of the value chain of those companies that are now struggling with the challenges of managing global innovation. Yves Doz and Keeley Wilson provide in this remarkable volume several frameworks for integrating capabilities around the world.

I commend Doz and Wilson on their brilliant use of several reader-friendly devices that include 17 "Sidebars," mini-commentaries on real-world situations that illustrate the given business principle. For example, "Tata Communications: A Globally Integrated Model" (Pages 10-12), Nokia: Attracting Leading Edge Research" (50-51), and "Sapphire: Strong Project Management Delivering Success" (162-164). These and other resources throughout the book can help business leaders to respond effectively to a daunting challenge, "building a global innovation capability that relies on complex knowledge will be difficult, though not impossible." What to do? Doz and Wilson propose a three-step process and explain how to complete each step.

These are among the passages of greatest interest and value to me. They suggest the range of subjects on which Doz and Wilson concentrate through their lively and eloquent narrative.

Also, I hope that those who read this commentary will be better prepared to determine whether or not they wish to read the book and, in that event, will have at least some idea of how the information, insights, and wisdom could perhaps be of substantial benefit to them and to their own organization.

Yves Doz and Keeley Wilson unravel diverse experiences to enlighten international strategy and management

The authors have successfully distilled a large amount of original, painstaking research with global companies in a number of diverse sectors, into practical, and well-articulated principles that change the way managers and strategists can approach innovation - not just in its more expected fields of innovation, but also in refocussing thinking on ways to optimise existing knowledge networks in any organisation and function within multinationals. For example these principles are just as valuable when implementing complex risk control functions across multiple jurisdictions in a financial institution where the product and expertise footprint varies widely, as they may ensure complex knowledge sources are leveraged to develop new products and services.

This is a seminal example of how to develop complex and diverse examples and experiences (including the opportunity to learn from their mistakes) from some of the world's most successful global companies into ergonomic tools and methods that managers at all levels with cross border and cross cultural objectives can leverage to optimise the effectiveness of their strategy and business structure.

This is critical reading for any international manager with aspirations to effect real, valuable change.

In "Little Red Riding Hood," Grandma exacts her feminist revenge on the woodchopper, who "assumes that womyn and wolves can't solve their own problems without a man's help." In "The Frog Prince," the princess, now an "eco-feminist warrior," discovers that her dream frog is not a prince, but a real-estate developer. In other tales, Rapunzel becomes a self-reliant coffee-house singer and the Three Little Pigs armed guerrillas, while cultural imperialists such as The Big Bad Wolf and Goldilocks get what has been coming to them for centuries. The author strikes just the right tone here: clever, with more than a touch of self-awareness. And while each of these tales is short and easily digestible, in this case quickly read does not equal quickly forgotten. After one finishes this collection, "happily ever after" will never seem quite the same.

CHANGING TIMES. A BIT SAD AND A BIT SCARY.

I had the pleasure of reading this one when it was first published in 1994 (now keep in mind, that was not that long ago...this is important). At the time I found the book to be hilarious. The author has taken a collection of some of our favorite bedtime stories, fairy tales, if you will, and rewritten them to make them "politically correct." Some of the stories the author has modified are Little Red Riding Hood, Chicken Little, Rumpelstiltskin, The Billy Goat Gruffs, Cinderella, The Frog Prince and Jack and the Beanstalk. There are more, but this gives you some idea of the content.

I recently reread this work. My, what a difference. While I still enjoyed the stories, I found them to be not quite as funny as I did during my first reading. I also read quite a number of the reviews that are posted here addressing this work, many of which are quite good, several drew different conclusions, and some were written by the clueless. I thought and thought on this matter, wondering why I did not snicker the same as before, then I realized....I, and apparently many others, have become completely or partially desensitized! It is not the author's fault, it is our fault and the fault (if fault it indeed is) of our society! What was simply funny in 1994, the satire used at that time, simply does not work as well today as it did then because so much of what was satirized at that time, has now become reality. We are use to the words "logically challenged" rather than simply "stupid." We actually have become the thing that the author was satirizing! This, for me, makes this book extremely interesting!

The author has done a very nice job of lampooning our politically correct society. As pointed out by several reviewers, yes, the author is indeed trite at times. The thing is, that when this work was first published, what is considered trite now, was not at that time. If you doubt this, then listen closely to the evening news for a few nights running. Now I do agree with a number of reviewers in that these stories should not be read all in one setting. Spread them out. Reading them back to back can be a bit of a chore and they do loose their effect.

Be-that-as-it-may, the book is well written, fun to read, and I think, even more to day than it was when it was first written, a reflection on us as a society. Poking fun at ourselves is healthy, poking fun at the way we act as a society is healthy. On the other hand, taking this work, and most others of this genre too seriously is not really all that good. Recommend this one highly. It is well written, well done and well worth the read.

Finally, a non-controversial book to read my parents to sleep!

At last! In my attempt to modernize my parents (especially my white cis hetero father) and teach them valuable lessons that they can use in life, I have found this book! I was a bit on edge, as I'm sure you can imagine, when purchasing this book. I had my concerns that this work, though it is advertised to be "politically correct", would still contain some offensive material that would scandalize a womon, such as myself, but none were found as I glanced through each of the beautifully politically-correct stories in this marvelous collection! Finally I can teach my cis-white-father how to properly respect all people (especially us womyn) as I read him to sleep every night! No other book could compare to this masterfully rewritten mistresspiece! Thank you so much James Finn Garner (though I do forgive you for being a man, and I'm ever so proud of you for attempting to rectify your gender's mistakes through this obvious CORRECTION to the original tales that were all written by oppressive white-cis-males!) for this book, and I'll be sure to pass it backwards for my father to read to his father so that we can all learn how to be politically-correct in such a trying day and age! Goddess bless you (and I say that figuratively, obviously, since I do not subscribe to such archaic oppressive male-enforced ideas such as religion, though if there were a supreme being, she would be female).

Politically Correct Bedtime Stories

This book is great! Two thumbs up and a pat on the back to James Finn Garner. He adapted the original bedtime story classics to become "politically correct" and created a one of a kind read. Garner is straining to be non-insulting to any group imaginable. Snow White becomes "melanin challenged", Chicken Little becomes "cranially under enhanced" and (my personal favorite), The Three Bears Family becomes an "anthropomorphic nuclear family".

It was a good read for me because it was funny (in a highly satirical way) and in a way is mocking some of the worlds political leaders. Sometimes they themselves struggle to be politically correct and not insulting to all groups of people, they end up sounding ridiculous! For example; the government Ireland banned the word "brainstorm" due to the fact it might offend people with cranial disabilities. People that might like this book are people who enjoy political satire, or just need a break from other genres. I found that reading humor often clears your mind.

A Simple but Comprehensive Guide to Ancient Chinese Medicine

Ted Kaptchuk has distilled the essence of ancient Chinese medicine in this clear expose. He explains the body organs as they were understood by the ancient Chinese, the acupuncture points and meridians, the fluids and flows, both of energy and fluids, in easy-to-understand language. A+ for clarifying the concepts of this medicine. With some imagination you may even begin to understand how such an ancient art could tackle modern challenges like AIDS and cancer, which it does. This book is a classic that will be around for a long time. The nice thing about it is that it clarifies ancient Chinese medicine to a person with no background in the subject.

Love this book!

Love this book! First of all let's set the record straight, once again. This is G.K. (Kenneth's wife).
This book has become one of my staples, lately. Nothing short of five stars, for sure. Not for everybody either. I have been into alternative medicine for quite some time, therefore, I fully understand these concepts. Unless you are a healer, a self-healer, an alternative medicine practitioner, or someone in the alternative healing/medicine field, I would not recommend it otherwise. Extremely informative, poetic in some ways, this book gently navigates you into the alternative fields of the Traditional Chinese medicine. It is quite a "work of art", I simply love it!

Excellent beginning for Oriental Medicine

I realize enthusiasm among reviewers for this text varies greatly. In the absence of identifying specific flaws, what we write may say more about us at the moment of our reading, than it says the about the text. However, I am personally skeptical about any review written by someone who did not bother to complete the book!!!

I had the first edition and admit I did not finish it. That was nearly 2 decades ago. I am not sure whether it was too far a stretch from my western graduate school and medical school education...or that I was just too busy to devote sufficient time and attention combined with an open mind.

I now have the 2000 edition. I intentionally approached this time with an open and curious mind -- looking for the bridges between eastern and western concepts of health and illness. Instead of rushing through to condense it into logical, highlighted memory bites, I simply let it wash over me. And during this time I attempted to let my western concepts of how the body works float in a suspended state to be retrieved and integrated at a later time.

I found that it provides a detailed but very readable "sky-view" of oriental medicine. It is not intended to provide specific treatment or diagnostic recommendations for an individual patient. Rather it builds the concepts upon which these later efforts can be refined. When you can see the bird's eye view of the terrain from above, its easier to see how cities, trees and rivers relate to each other and then draw your own map.

Reading from this perspective I truly enjoyed the book, its artistry and the holistic, natural metaphors connecting the microcosm of the body with the greater world and universe in which we exist. Refreshing!!!

I found it to be a wonderful invitation into the world of eastern medicine, whetting a respectful longing to learn more. I'm probably glad I lost the first edition and started over with the newer one.

Elder-Vass has much of substance to contribute to making social constructionism more sophisticated. Readers who enjoyed Hacking's or Searle's work on this subject will probably find this book valuable.

However, Elder-Vass doesn't understand Derrida or post-structuralism; he completely mischaracterizes Derrida's view. It's particularly telling that almost all of his references to Derrida are based on secondary literature. That's appropriate I guess for college kids writing term papers, but that should be unacceptable for a Cambridge UP author. That's something that peer review should have flagged in my opinion.

"It is a fascinating collection of essays by a group who have all made (and many continue to make) significant contributions to this interdisciplinary field. I really enjoyed this book and would encourage anyone who wants a historical perspective on the field to read it. It would make a great starting point for a graduate seminar that traces the history of the development of major ideas in animal behavior and behavioral ecology since the 1960s."
