I don't work for Princeton Review, all I used was this book and it worked tremendously

First of all, I never write reviews, but I read a couple of reviews on here (apparently written by GRE tutors) that, quite frankly, appalled me to my core and so here it goes:

One reviewer states , "Don't let this book give you a false sense of security."

-Do not listen to that. Any sense of security going in to that exam is a good thing.

Same reviewer then makes the audacious claim that in order to get the "highest score possible", at a minimum, you should spend upwards of $100 on prep materials instead of this book.

-Ordering and receiving all these materials at once, and then trying to digest them all simultaneously, will probably overwhelm you into a catatonic fetal position. You should dip your feet in the water first before diving in, and this book is a good guide for these uncharted waters.

Finally, said reviewer leaves you with the ominous and foreboding cliffhanger, "The GRE is easy for some, but not for most."

-Boy, am I glad I didn't talk to YOU before I took the GRE. Jeez Louise. I couldn't think of a worse mentality to put someone in before preparing for the exam. Mentality, that's the name of the game here, and that's what these tests are really, just games with a score, and in this game, and just like any other game, you've got to learn how to play. This book will help you do that.

-My Actual Review of the Book-

I started preparing for the GRE about 2.5 months before I was going to take it, and all I did was read this book from front to cover. I read every page, answered every question, and read my flashcards every now and then for maybe an hour or a half hour each day. I had no tutor and didn't use any other books besides this one. I had just graduated college so I had very little money, and don't ask me why, but I felt that if I just bought one of these test prep books and read it front to cover, I'd be as prepared as I'd ever be for the exam. Honestly, I chose Princeton Review because I figured it was most likely written by Ivy League people and they we're probably smarter than I was. After 2.5 months I took the exam and did very well, well enough to be accepted to an Ivy League PhD program and would absolutely attribute a lot of that success to this book.

The great thing about this book is that it actually reads like a book and not like a textbook. In fact, I would recommend that if you do get this book, to read it front to cover. The tone and language of the book is very personable, succinct, and straightforward. The way it's narrated, it's almost like a story where you are the main character, the GRE is the setting, and to get into grad school you must overcome these obstacles that are sections on the test.

The book builds your knowledge of the test and subsequent test-taking strategies from the ground up. These strategies are very logical and effective, and if you practice them you will bring them with you into the room come test time. Done correctly, this book should frame the exam for you in a way so that when you go to the testing center to take the exam, you'll be walking in knowing what to expect and how to deal.

Historian of Science Hankins did great!

Hankins was my sr. thesis advisor at UW in the early 80s (pre-publication of this book). The scope of his learning is astonishing and his handling of the 18th c philosophes, technology and religion was great. I highly recommend this book.

Foundation is the key

This is an excellent book for those interested in laying the foundation toward the understanding of fluids and acid/base. This is an exceptionally intricate topic but this book really does a great job in getting you started. I think the target audience is ideally the 3rd year medical student. However, it is never too late to read this book and as a resident I go back to it on occasion to help me to see the greater picture.
This book is very interesting and can be read with understanding in a weekend. However, I must say this is one of those books that should be read many times over. Every time I pick it up I learn something new...however, that is part of the beauty of acid/base and electrolytes in general.

I believe that electrolytes are the key to much of medicine. However, most students/residents/attendings dismiss electrolytes as if they represent merely yesterday's news. As stated - I think this book is really a very good STARTER-book. The electrolytes fever may take place here. Should you catch the fever I have two more books that I highly recommend.

Pick up Mitch Halperin's Fluid, Electrolyte, and Acid-Base Physiology. This book is full of clinical examples and uses a practical integrative physiology approach to learning. Well worth any amount of money that you put down.

Burton Rose's Clinical Physiology of Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disorders is a beautiful text as well. This is the "Up-to-Date" guy that many residents/physicians use while on-call. Heck, most physicians that use the service have read his hyponatremia sections in Up-to-Date. Well, his book will NOT disappoint.

A MUST for any med student! Even the attending nephrologists use it!!

This book is great! Its small size keeps it from being intimidating, and it is short enough that you can cram two nights before the exam. (I did!) In our classes, the attending nephrologists swore by this book. They use it on their floors to teach their nephrology fellows and residents about these often-misunderstood topics. It clearly answers most of your questions about how to keep acids and bases straight as well as the guidelines for hypokalemia, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, and hypernatremia. For a smaller book, it packs a big punch!

First - to comment on the "negative reviews":

1 - Yes, you need to know some renal physio to read this book, this is a book that is highly recommended for Medical Students, not for patient education.

2 - Right - this book is not intended to teach Renal physio -- read the title of this book. Dont look for explanations on GFR and the such in here -- this book was not made for this.

Ok - now my review:

This book will help you in your clinical studies tremendously -- it helped me while taking internal medicine (helps you finally learn which patients need which kinds of fluids with which supplementations, and at what rate to give it, etc.), tx of DKA is prevalent in my hospital and it helped with that too. It helped me in Critical Care -- where accurate reading of ABGs is mandatory, hyponatremia/pseudohyponatremia is super common, and other electrolyte disturbances need to be evaluated. Even helped me in GI! I haven't taken Nephro yet -- but I am sure it will help me there too.

This book is concise, logical, and clear. It makes tough topics easy to understand, but does not oversimplify. Topics that are super high yield for clinical practice and step 2 are explained perfectly. Perfect for med students. I think it will be too simplistic for residents -- who I think already know this stuff cold. This book is great and I highly recommend it.

Cutting and Pasting

Even though Dean Miles does not believe in camera-mounted microphones, he has had to acknowledge that there are many loan-wolf operators that are both the camera and sound man. This book is tailored for them.

The book includes chapters on location selection, sound elements, video cameras, camera mounted microphones, lavalier microphones, wireless systems, handheld microphones and DSLR cameras. The writing is simple and easy to understand and perfect for the cameraman who also has to work the microphone. The book is quite practical, even giving instructions on how the male cameraman/soundman can route the wire of a lavalier mike down the shirt of female talent.

The book is a cut-and-paste job from Miles’ far more comprehensive book, Location Audio Simplified: Capturing Your Audio... and Your Audience. That book includes chapters on mixers, using a boom, field recorders, and how to mike interviews, among other things. If you’ve read that book, you don’t need this book.

The author says that audio recorded by DSLRs is of poor quality and I agree with him. He suggests that DSLR videographers record sound on a separate recorder and synchronize to the image in post-production. He strongly recommends the Shure VP83 Lens Hopper, which includes its own built in digital recorder. He ignores the option to use other recorders like the Zoom H4n (and its successors), which can record from a microphone, and like the Lens Hopper, provide a line to a camera. I’ve actually found the Zoom to be superior to the Shure since it can also take the XLR inputs that many mikes provide. He also seems to think that only Canon DSLRs have headphone outputs, but my 4 year old Nikon also handles headphones.

Throughout the book he refers the reader to on-line video content which is only available for a fee five times as much as this book. I didn’t invest in this content since I thought there was unlikely to be any more information there than in this book.

If you are seriously interested in audio, you probably are better off reading Location Audio Simplified: Capturing Your Audio... and Your Audience. If all you want is a quick walk-through, this book will do the job.

This review is based on the 2016 edition, although the only edition that shows on the Amazon site is the 2014 edition. I suspect that with all the changes in electronics these days, there may be information in the 2016 edition that did not appear in the 2014 edition.
