Mark Christopher Weber is an award-winning artist whose work appears in many corporate collections including Shell Oil, Marathon Oil, Grand Canyon Association and the Federal Reserve Building. He is also represented in galleries in California, Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Utah and Japan. Mark lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Recommended for the beginner

I was a little bit disappointed, much of this I had figured out by trial and error, but I did pick up some new information that will help refine my technique and should improve my paint handling. I like the authors works illustrated in the book and it's nice to get his explanation of the techniques he used while painting. There are several step by step paintings in that back of the book for some very nice pictures and will provide a great start for the budding realism painter. I gave the book 4 stars for Weber's excellent presentation of material indicated by the title - I would have saved a lot of time and paint had I read it when I first got serious about painting. If you've been at it for a while, this is a nice one for the library, but there are other books out there that could be a better choice for your skill level.

As a beginner exactly what I needed

I was looking for a book that actually showed me how to paint and this book does. I just began oil painting and other books just tell you, " paint the trees with the fan". Exactly how am I suppose to do that? This book has filled in a lot of gaps for me. I really recommend it. Among many other things it shows you with photos how to load the paint on your brush, with what angle to do so, and what pressure to use when you apply it to the canvas to get the effects you want. I feel much more confident and more able to get what I want out of the paint after reading it and practicing with it. I have high standards with books and I am very happy I bought this.

About the Author

Wendy Oliver, EdD, is a professor of dance in the department of theater, dance, and film at Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island. She has degrees in English, dance, and dance education and has taught dance at the college level for over 20 years. She believes that writing has a place in every dance course and she incorporates dance criticism, dance research, and informal dance writing into her classes on a regular basis.

Oliver worked briefly as a dance critic, and later wrote her dissertation on the teaching of dance criticism at the college level. She has edited three books, and has published dance articles in a variety of books and journals, including the Journal of Dance in Education; Dance Research Journal; and the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. She is an editorial board member for the Journal of Dance in Education and has served on the board for the Congress on Research for Dance. She also served as director of publications for the National Dance Association and is co-coordinator of the Rhode Island Arts Proficiencies in Dance.

Oliver was honored in Who’s Who of American Women in 2008 to 2009 and received the National Dance Association Scholar/Artist Award in 2008. She was also listed in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers from 2003 to 2006 and received the Dance Educator of the Year Award in 1998 from the Rhode Island AAHPERD.

This book has fantastic prompts from journals, to research papers, to choreographic analizing, and personal reflection. I have already used some of the ideas with my classes and they have responded very well to them. Good resource.
