The word “style” has become a weariness to think upon; so much is said, so much is printed about the art of expression, about methods, tricks, and turns; so many people, without any long experience, set up to be judges of style, on the strength of having admired two or three modern and often rather fantastic writers. About our author, however, we know that his experience has been long, and of the best, that he does not speak from a hasty acquaintance with a few contemporary prcieux and prcieuses. The bad writing of his time he traces, as much of our own may be traced, to “the pursuit of novelty in thought,” or rather in expression. “It is this that has turned the brain of nearly all our learned world to-day.” “Gardons nous d’crire trop bien,” he might have said, “c’est la pire manire qu’il y’ait d’crire.”I.5 The Sublime, with which he concerns himself, is “a certain loftiness and excellence of language,” which “takes the reader out of himself.... The Sublime, acting with an imperious and irresistible force, sways every reader whether he will or no.” In its own sphere the Sublime does what “natural magic” does in the poetical rendering of nature, and perhaps in the same scarcely-to-be-analysed fashion. Whether this art can be taught or not is a question which the author treats with modesty. Then, as now, people were denying (and not unjustly) that this art can be taught by rule. The author does not go so far as to say that Criticism, “unlike Justice, does little evil, and little good; that is, if to entertain for a moment delicate and curious minds is to do little good.” He does not rate his business so low as that. He admits that the inspiration comes from genius, from nature. But “an author can only learn from art when he is to abandon himself to the direction of his genius.”

About the Author
Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

appropriate words have power
By Mark
Unlike other first century Treatises, the On the Sublime by Longinus has passed through the filtering of time and survived to be still relevant for usage for today's writers and orators. It is a "How to do book" in the demonstrating of the power contained in figurative language to illustrate its importance in the art of sublimity. It shows the many ways that sublimity can inspire awe to promote the sensation, and the perception
of something inferior becoming something which possesses a higher worth. There is a laundry list which includes expressions, passions, manners and styles which can both elevate and exalt especially in dignity ,or honor those marked objects which are being targeted. The examples of the many styles can range from the choice or the transposition of words used, the solemn urging (adjuration), the using of longer phrasing in place of a shorter ones (periphrasis) to the boldness of the usage of metaphors. Also, there are examples of styles which are opposed to sublimity like bombast and false sentiment. In addition, the vices of style which are destructive to sublimity like the abuse of rhythm, broken and jerky clauses and the improper use of familiar words are revealed by the author. If one is really interested in the craft of writing, this book is worth a read, in that; it has endured the test of time in serving as a standard of excellence in the teaching of the sublime.
